Showed the missus a photo of Lilac Liz earlier today her first comment was ‘what? Really? Ugh’ Her second when being told it was approved by Buck House was ‘I thought she had better taste than that?’ :)
In other news I’ve rather enjoyed seeing 44004 out in action on the webcam today, I had a cab ride in that on the GC as a kid on the Windcutters when the double track was used for parallel running, so it’s a bit of a special machine for me :)

Glad they didn't pucify an MN. Purple wheel centres too would've been a tad OTT. :)

The pinkish-mauve livery on "No 70" is clearly not to everyone's taste. But is it any more vulgar or outlandish than the colours carried by Mr Stroudley's "Gladstone" at the NRM?

    https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/214-gladstone-lbscr-214-lbscr-618-sr-b618/

Both engines are products of Brighton Works.

Really no comparison. Stroudley’s improved engine green was a livery chosen by a railway company as part of its corporate identity. Lilac Lizzie is merely to give a preserved railway a bit of publicity. Mercifully it will be of short duration

It doesn't seem all that different to me? The Severn Valley is a company operating a railway. They've chosen to paint one of their pieces of machinery in an unusual colour as part of their corporate strategy. The same as when they painted the A4s silver, or blue, or the Coronation's Blue or even painting Tower Bridge blue and white. It's an object, owned by a company (or individual), surely its correct livery is whatever the organisation fielding it chooses it to be in? Why has this caused so much upset, but say the WHR get off scot free painting their garratts in a variety of colours?

Out of historical curiosity, did people get this upset when the Bluebell or the KWVR had to paint their locos in off-brand colours? Do people cause a fuss now when they go back into those colours, or is it accepted as a part of their history despite them just being the choice of the company at the time?

Those Air brakes and air pump are totally non authentic too! In all seriousness I’m not a big fan of Phil Swallow but it’s his engine, he can do what wants with it.

Got to say, had you made the statement about the Stroudley livery with respect to Robert Billinton's B2 or B4 I'd be less likey to be sat here sharpening my pitchfork and muttering one of L/Cpl Jones's catchphrases! ;)

I was lucky enough to see Gladstone during it's visit home for Brighton 150 and have to say it looked magnificent ..... where in "colourised" images of later Brighton tender designs (which are all we have of course :() it looked far too 'fussy' to my eye. The only real difference AFAICS being the way the red lining was applied to the conventional (i.e. outside framed) tenders favoured by Biliinton Snr.

Re: the purple one ..... it's just a coat of paint and only for a few months. We've had one-off paint jobs to mark this or that special occasion since at least Webb's red and white 2-2-2-2's on the LNWR (to complement the Caley blue on the last leg of the WCML) well over a century ago. I honestly can't see what the kerfuffle is about.

The air brake equipment has only minimal visual impact (connecting hoses front and back). As I’ve said before, thankfully this change is only short term

The SVR is or was an operating heritage railway not a transport provider. This engine will revert to normal later this year so not really a problem. The operative word is heritage although I’m a bit concerned about where the current management are taking it

As I've said before, I'm all for it. That said, I do feel that the shade of purple is a little bit light - as others have said, it does almost look pink - but otherwise, why not? It's been done tastefully in that the engine is lined out to a high standard in colours that complement the base colour, it has a smart crest on the tender, a number on the cab side (in a clearly readable typeface, none of this fancy, unreadable lettering that a lot of the Jubilee branding elsewhere features) and a smokebox numberplate to match.

I genuinely wouldn't mind seeing more railways do this - not half their fleet in promotional liveries, and certainly not liveries featuring a local company's branding - I think either would be a step too far - but the occasional, temporary 'what-if' or house livery on a single loco would be great.

A short video of D1015 'Western Champion' making some Maybach music in the valley on Saturday. If you decide to watch it, I hope you enjoy it :)

I've never knowingly met him but totally agree with you on "owner's prerogative". The last time the full SVR shareholder list was published (2016) he had the second largest shareholding in the PLC after the Guarantee company, with just over 390,000 shares, so he has certainly made a significant financial contribution to the railway as well as basing a locomotive there. He has been on the PLC Board since February 2021* so his current shareholding will appear in the next set of PLC accounts due out shortly – for context the Director with the next most shares had just under 12,000 as shown in last year's accounts.

*Curiously Companies House suggests that he resigned on 11 April 2022 and was re-appointed the same day. No idea why.

Don’t forget his contribution to the diesel side, particularly the Class 50 Alliance.

At the cost of a friend of mine having to move his locos away.

    Question.

Should you be circulating a discount code without prior permission from the sender? If this email is part of a circular sent to subscribers then it should stay within subscribers.

I personally can not see the issue. Anyone can become a subscriber to the SVR newsletter and this is clearly a marketing ploy to get 'bums on seats'.
By circulating the email it might encourage other people to book and / or become subscribers themselves - who might not normally have travelled, sounds a win win to me!

If the railway is happy to send a discount code to a non-member of the railway (and despondent shareholder) then I'm sure that they would be happy to offer the discount to others.

June 2nd is getting mighty close. Perhaps bookings are a tad steady due to the present financial climate . <BJ>
