Fairly rare track for some, going via Chapel-en-le-Frith. Been several years since the last one. Sadly, if there hadn't been a change to 'return via outward' back in January, I'd have booked it. Still, RTC's loss is GWSR's gain that weekend!

Certainly not the " You will have ample time in Buxton, the highest market town in England, during the afternoon break for you to explore this attractive market town." that is in the RTC write up for the trip. o_O

I believe that the last steam hauled train over the LNWR line from Buxton was on 20th October 2007 with 76079+45407.

Since then several have been initially advertised via this route but actually routed via Peak Forest, allegedly due to a restriction in Eaves Tunnel.

The LNWR line includes the spectacular 1 in 68 gradient from Buxton to Bibbington Summit, with the operating bonus of avoiding the light engine working to Chinley triangle.

Think there was a trip advertised in 2015 with 61994 and A. N. Other. Seem to recall it got caped following the Wootton Bassett incident. Hopefully the Eaves Tunnel restriction has been sorted as I'll be on the look out for a future trip!

    Later than that, I think.

On 5/11/11 the Buxton Spa went out from Preston via Hazel Grove and Eaves, returning via Great Rocks, Sheffield, Swinton, Wakefield, Hebden Bridge and Rochdale. The locos were 45407 and 44871. It was a great trip.

Done this route a few times with steam, out one way and back the other. Suprised they dont do it more regularly, scenic route, and saves turning the engine.

“They” don’t do it more often, because pathing doesn’t normally allow any extra on the ‘Wessie’ line, via Whaley Bridge. The current reduced-frequency Northern service has made it possible.

Pleased to see the Hope Valley line had pathing space for a staff stop at Hathersage! ;)

But less pleased that there seems to be no pathing space to allow a passenger drop off stop on the return south at Leicester ? ☹️

Many thanks. It's always reassuring to see your drop off detailed in the timings

This looks appealing, just hope the rear gunner doesn't over step its mark unless needed, which I'm sure it will out of Buxton.

It wasn't like that on 5/11/11 with the double headers. Sign of the times, I guess.
