As someone who does not know the sub divisions of the colour green what would you call the different shades of green displayed on 7822 and 7828, seen here at Llangollan in 1989? To me 7822 looks to be in the correct shade but it was common at one time to see locos in the lighter shade carried by 7828 (I remember the sectioned Merchant, 35029, was in this lighter shade when the NRM first opened). Is one Middle Chrome and the other Brunswick? 89-6-18 37 7828+7822 copy.jpg

    Sorry for the thread drift.

They're meant to be the same - presumably one paint supplier's interpretation is different to another's

Steam Railway Magazine. This should (I think) mean the start of 5029’s overhaul. It would be great if LSL had 5029 and 6024 operating out of Bristol. On the other hand 60532 should operate regularly on the S&C.

Good point. I struggle to tell the difference between a Peppercorn A1 and A2 myself.

so why then is Brunswick Green almost universally referred to as the colour of BR locomotives . Where did the term come from and how did it become so widespread

The colour of Odney Manor was always far too light.

I believe it was the closest colour in the humbrol/airfix range in the '60s, and it's all come from modellers!

Seems as this has turned into a bit of paint froth, can I add The Tender totem on 7822 always seemed a little on the large side for me.
Now how can we crowbar 36001 into this thread? ;)

What we call Middle chrome green, can come in a multitude of shades, because no two batches of paint were the same, and each region had it would appear their own version of it, and of course each batch would have further changes depending on the pigment mix, so its possible that an engine painted at one works, would be darker, lighter, or even have changes in the appearance of the colour, from another works loco, yet both would be in Middle Chrome Green .

I seem to remember that in its last period in ticket, Bahamas was Brunswick Green. It definitely had a blue hue to it, and didn't look like anything I recall seeing in photos of BR steam in colour. It looks superb now though in Middle Chrome Green!

I think that’s because it was painted over the rubbed down previous red livery. What’s underneath does make a difference. Midland red was a a much richer shade than LMS red and the consensus wax that was down to the Midland used a brown undercoat while the LMS used grey

"Brunswick Green" may never have been used by the old GWR or BR. But it was used on some LNER locos.

I also note that the present-day livery of GWR Trains seems more bluish than traditional GWR Green, and might arguably be described as Brunswick Green.

Aberdeen is my preference given it’s my home route (if it comes along the Fife coast) and as it used to be a Ferryhill loco for a lot of its working life.

I’m all for a re-run of Pathfinders ‘Ayr Raider’ tour especially as it started my love affair with this machine as a 14 year old and it was my Birthday Present, I think it was this time NELPG let it off the leash a little and it gave in some cracking performance’s.
    (I have a massive thing for 60532, I think it’s a wonderful machine)

70000 was the first choice, the substitute was very much Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, 60532 came off the bench and scored in spectacular fashion!
