More work has been undertaken today, with more to come tomorrow. The cab has been prepared for welding for it to form part of the visitor area at Centenary Works. Many hours and oaths later, we are preparing to separate chassis from bogies. More of that to come yet! Sandi the telehandler now carries LMS10000 decals.

 

Isn't the Morgan actually a Marlin?... but good to see the steady progress being made.

 

The cab we are retaining was placed in position yesterday as a 'Gate Guardian'. It will form part of the visitor display outside Centenary Works. It is alongside the garden created for us by Wirksworth U3A.

 

Space is tight between the chassis and bogies of any locomotive. here we see the view of 58022 taken today. We are preparing to lift the chassis. Of the changes to be made, our own Engineering Overview states: "The primary modifications that will be made to the chassis are the inclusion of cross stretchers to accept EM2 type bogie pivots and transfer the weight of the body onto the bogies via traditional bogie bolster pads to the EM2 design. Having stripped the chassis we are now putting a lot of things on top of it! Why?
So far we have added 14 tonnes onto the chassis. It is being done in order to apply some weight to the chassis and therefore reduce strain on straps connecting bogies and chassis.
This will enable the loco to be shunted around Wirksworth yard (otherwise it would be rather inflexible).

 

On Monday 22nd the chassis of 58022 was successfully and safely lifted from its bogies, inverted and placed on the Society's Sturgeon wagon, ready to be prepared to fit the ex-EM2 bogies. It is with deep sadness that we have to report that the Society's President, Stan Fletcher, has passed away aged 102. He was a commissioning engineer on 10000 and 10001 and worked in this capacity for English Electric, later GEC in many countries.

The Trustees feel this loss deeply and are resolved to maintain this work that to recreate 10000, a loco which meant so much to Stan. He was perhaps the last of the "gentleman engineers". We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, Jo, Sally and all the family.

 

RIP. A great man. Interestingly, unlike Riddles/Jarvis/da Porta, he was there at the beginning of the start and (possibly) the beginning of the end of internal combustion traction as main driver of railways. It would be a bit like Trevithick being around for a replica Catch-me-who-can in 1948

 

Saturday this week was a very productive day again with seven of us present. We uncovered the inverted chassis for the first time since last summer. We set to work on removing everything left under the class 58 we don't need for its repurposing as the LMS 10000 chassis.

 

The LMS10000 engineering team are on the lookout for the following parts:

Class 37/86
▪ Westinghouse dual brake equipment

Class 20
▪ 2 sets of inlet / outlet manifolds
▪ 4 Napier turbochargers for retro tuning of the 56 PU

We would be grateful if you could identify any available (the current DRS sale has none).

I was about to say, since the last post was from 2023.

 

Indeed - worth keeping an eye on the website for the "Ivatt Informer": members of the IDRS also get a magazine called "Icon". The donor chassis is now on a flat wagon (upside-down, I believe) whilst the bogies are being worked on to get the brakes working, the traction motors are being worked on and the ex-Class 58 electrical cubicle is going well.
