Yes, back into the hold of the ship, between 4 and 8 metres apparently.

It still exists at GE's works as a test loco, and is pretty straight now.

What damage did it do to the ship?

"The vessel’s in-built cranes had lifted No.s 70008/9/10 and 11 and deposited them on the quayside, but during the lift of 70012, one of the slings ruptured. One end of the 135-ton loco plunged some 15 feet onto the pontoon deck, quickly followed by the other end as the stress proved too much for the remaining slings.

As can be seen from the photograph, the frame and body of the loco were substantially bent in the impact, which effectively wrecked the locomotive by ‘breaking its back’. There was serious damage to the roofline, the bodywork and the wheelsets, not to mention as-yet unknown hidden damage behind the panelling.

Said on observer of the incident: “Unloading of the locos did not start until 14.30 and unusually continued into the hours of darkness. No. 12 broke through the deck and landed on top of food products. The only good thing is that it was the last loco to be lifted out and not the first, as otherwise it would have fallen onto the others and smashed them up too".

....meanwhile, back in the present day...... the Trust is undertaking to ensure, now that Covid-19 seems to be retreating, that members of the various P2 'clubs' get exclusive access to key events affecting the component they are sponsoring.... watch out for new dates affecting the Boiler Club, Cylinder and Monobloc Clubs, and, in due course, the Tender Club......

I read elsewhere that Daniela Filová set up her own engineering company, Daniela Works Ltd. Will this have any effect on the progress of the P2?

Will there be a "club club" for anyone joining all of the clubs...

I assume Daniella will in the short-term be very incentivised, as her cv will be largely made of it. Medium-term I would assume the company know what's going on and have succession plan. It's a fairly well-know trade-off in less well-paid roles, stay for a bit for the experience then branch out whilst remaining partially involved for continuity.

Her website shows that she has refurbished the superheater header for 60163, so I would guess that she might pick up work from the A1/P2 and (in time) V4 as they know each other well. She seems to have setup quite a well equipped workshop. Good luck to her.

Indeed, since she has set up her own machine shop she has actually increased the Trust's engineering capacity.

I hope we are going to see some pre/post bake heat treatment photos. There should be some pretty colors on the assy when it comes out of the oven/blankets.

I think it shows evidence of been heated past the "pretty COLOURS" stage. It would not be at all effective (stress relief) at such a low temperature. In the process the fabrication would have turned red @ 1200f. Then there is a very controlled cooling programme according to the mass of the structure in totally still air. I'm not a metallurgist by the way but have some knowledge. It is also the case from my experience that the heat treatment people will maybe be involved with the fabrication structure as they possess knowledge how it will react/distort to stress relief. Don't forget..you're in effect releasing highly stressed elements. It would interesting to know if finite element analysis has been used in the design as I'm sure that is now available. This is used in ship hull fabrication now, as obviously you can't put a ship in oven...yet.
Remember the Liberty ships churned out in WW2 suffered from a lot of stress fractures, some quite serious.

Now that is a work of art! Beautiful! Howco must be very proud to have created this masterpiece, and quite rightly so.

Howco did very well with this. They managed to maintain critical dimensions to a degree which has been described as "remarkably close" to the drawing dimensions and further there was no significant distortion as a result of the necessary heat treatment process. There has been some serious thinking and work by a number of skilled people behind this, both in the Trust and in Howco and possibly elsewhere and it has paid off in the result seen.

I don't believe that the preservation movement will require a fabrication which would be more involved than this one, though the new build people might yet surprise us. The creation of a new block for Green Arrow should present few problems after this and it might be advisable to take advantage of the skills and knowledge used here to move swiftly and not assume that this capability will remain unchanged. This is an opportunity and there is no certainty with respect to how long the door might remain open.
