Duh! I should have thought of that. It's just that I don't think I've never seen one like that.

As the headcode disc says, it's still on trial - no point in putting/painting on all the extras until you're sure you don't have to take bits of it off again!

It doesn't look to have been top-coated yet, the engine and tender are different shades of green. I have to say, the chimney looks quite good like that! (Runs and hides!)

On the SVR website it says 71516 is stored unserviceable, needs new cylinder block.

    What happened to cause that?

Inside cylinder disease. The top of the block rots away due to the acidic water found in smokeboxes. Most inside cylinder locos suffer from it to a greater or lesser degree.

I suspect any Halls in the area would have been allocated to WOS rather than KDR. Also being Red, they wouldn't have got any further north than Stourport and Bewdley. Although Tony Barfield and his driver Mervyn "accidentally" took 6877 Llanfair Grange as far as Bridgnorth on one occasion, so stranger things have happened…

Plus everyone knows that the correct code on TOPS for Kidderminster these days is KD now it’s a TMD with several D400’s and a 1000 allocated to it ;)
I believe 4150 will have SBJ as it’s allocation code when it returns to service.

Do we run any steam engines these days?
We may aswell stuff and mount our fleet these days.

O wait 6 cl50s and only 3 of them work. So we hire a cl20, a cl45 when we are meant to be cost saving.

What a strange post, however, perhaps ignorance is bliss?
Your last line answers your first line, there is less steam because coal supplies are short and very expensive. It is cheaper to run a diesel. So either a diesel or no train at all currently.
Just as no one expects old steam engines to run all the time, sometimes some (equally) old diesels are out for repair. The status of the Fifty Fund fleet is the latest SVR News. 50031 is hoped to return by Autumn, with another waiting wheel set replacement.
As regards hire ins, just because a loco is based on the SVR it doesn't mean it appears on the front of a train for free. A fee is often payable to the loco owners no matter where the loco comes from.
I believe the class 20 is quick to start and there is good traction knowledge amongst volunteer drivers, given the regular use of diesels now this is an important factor. So one has been hired in. The NYMR has done similarly this year.
The Peak has effectively replaced the deltic which was due to be hired this summer and I believe the owners are looking to see if a steam heat boiler the group have in store can be fitted by SVR engineers. This would provide a second steam heat diesel (in addition to the class 40) for use by the SVR in winter months. This would look like mutually beneficial business sense for all parties, as the coal issues are not going to be resolved any time soon.
I am not a volunteer, all the above information is available in SVR News or Railway publications should you wish to find out why things are happening.

Due to the fire risk from the ongoing hot dry weather, the SVR have announced that there's no steam for the next few days (to be reviewed 19th July).

Not totally "no steam". The announcement mentions steam footplate rides at Bridgnorth for freedom of the line ticket holders.

The Kidderminster weather forecast for Weds 20th suggests a 40% chance of 2mm of rain, followed by more dry weather.

Which, to be honest, isn't very promising. But we shall see I suppose.

If you want to be pedantic as per usual 45110 isn’t a Class 45 either is it?
If there’s ETH now fitted to it I’m sure Jeremy’s lot wouldn’t mind a look to see how it was done. :p

4930 is now at Kidderminster, ready to go into the TMD for painting next week.
