There’s only 2” difference though between a Black 5 and a Bulleid Pacific?

I did think that there couldn't be much difference! Must have misunderstood then. Anyone know the real reason? I defo read Hartland wasn't going to Whitby.

I'm only reporting what I have read, too. I've a feeling the decision to not run 34101 to Whitby was based on the trial with 60007, which may be a misleading comparator. Time will tell, but it certainly seems to me that the current Whitby fleet is inadequate.

What happened in the trial with 60007?
It certainly does seem that the Whitby fleet is thin on the ground at the moment. As far as I know, there's 825, 5407, 926 and 76079 certified but not all of those are currently in service.

I understood that the issue with 60007 was to do with the trailing truck rather than the drivers, but stand to correction.

825, 5428, 926 an 76079 were al expected to be operational this year, which is adequate. It costs a lot of pennies to equip a loco for running to Whitby. 44806 is well on its way through its overhaul and will be Whitby registered. 75029 already is and its overhaul is ongoing. That fleet should be plenty to keep the railway operational in normal times. A Bulleid has never been to Whitby. It would be an expensive trial to fit it with everything then find it doesn't like the curves. Not sure if any pacific has ever been there, other than the trial with 60007.

80135 used to run to Whitby, but did it have all the gubbins, or was it a hangover from less demanding times? If it was equipped, has it now been cannibalised for other locos?

Withdrawn before TPWS was compulsory I think?

60007 made a few trips to Whitby, 4 over two days plus a trial run I believe. The noise of air being sucked through teeth by the engineers was almost enough to drown out the flange squeal and grinding of Cartazzi bearings!

The 47 is apparently due to be out all week; is it Whitby-passed, do we know?

Not at the moment. That's for the future, perhaps.

Looks like tomorrow is going to be all diesel with 37264, 37403 & 47077 in use. Is this a first? I think even in 1976 it was steam between Grosmont and Goathland and even diesel galas usually have a token steam working.

80135 has indeed run to Whitby but it was in earlier times before current legislation came into being. Likewise 92220 has made that same journey but wouldn't be allowed today.
Whether 80135 will be fitted with TPWS, AWS & GSMR is yet to be decided. Water capacity is the main problem. If running to Whitby, water can be taken at Grosmont but can't realistically be taken again until it gets to Pickering. It may only be 30 miles but it is a gruelling 30 miles and, in BR days, Cl.4 tanks were only allowed five coaches, not the seven that is todays norm.

I thought 37264 was out of action for the foreseeable? Has it been repaired?

Dunno is the short answer but it is rostered to work the 13.30 and return. I guess that it’s possible to isolate the offending traction motor but I’m no diesel electric expert.

Perhaps it is because I am a simple soul but am I the only one who thinks that when a heritage railway feels the need to appoint a "director of corporate services" someone has lost the plot?

The NYMR seems to be going over to modern titles with a CEO as well. There’s a thought to get rid of the title of Inspector and replace it with Assessor but that is meeting some resistance.

Probably not but it feeds into the level of professionalism thats needed to run a heritage railway in [current year]. We're in the age of instant communication and it looks like Laura's role covers oversight of a lot of departments including a lot of public facing departments. Can't just have people turn up to be told theres no trains because of Force Majeure.
