    Image 25-04. 92063 52H Tyne Dock 26.11.jpg

One of the Tyne Dock class 9Fs a week after it had worked the last steam-hauled Tyne Dock - Consett iron ore train prior to being immediately withdrawn from service. Ten such locomotives were shedded at 52H, easily distinguished from other members of the class by the presence of the two air pumps fitted to the running plate, used to operate the doors on the iron-ore wagons.
The photograph was taken on 26 November 1966, a date which is mentioned in Alan's detailed account of the decline of steam traction at that time at Blyth.
    Five sheds were visited that day with the following classes noted on shed;

    51C West Hartlepool - 6 x K1, 8 x Q6, 3 x Ivatt 4s, 10 x WD.
    52F Blyth - North 1 x B1, 6 x Ivatt 4s; South 4 x J27, 2 x Ivatt 4s
    52G Sunderland - 3 x Q6, 5 x J27, 3 x WD
    52H Tyne Dock - 2 x K1, 10 x Q6, 2 x J27, 2 x 9F.

Happy memories of taking my Dad for a return trip at that gala, one way behind Sir Nigel, the return with Tornado and riding in a teak carriage. We were up from Kent to visit the Harrogate ME exhibition with my Son. Three generations with steam in the blood

Nice to see Bittern carrying its proper shed code, rather than the 50A it carried when it first went into preservation and was stabled at York. Until it was transferred to Scotland in 1963 for its last few years of service Bittern was a Heaton/Gateshead engine from new, tranferring to Gateshead in 1943.

The last day of steam in the Northumberland/Durham area. 9th September 1967.

7029 Clun Castle entering the King Edward Bridge on a special from the south. I was standing on the parapet to see over the heads of the others there. 7029 had been found to be out of guage for the curve at the Central Station a few days before, so it was taken off the train on the bridge. K1 62005, especially spruced up for the occasion, with the top of the chimney painted copper, came off Gateshead shed shortly before the Castle arrived and took over the train for the last couple of hundred yards into the station. 7029 then came into Gateshead shed for servicing (2nd shot, standing next to the 'Pacific Shed'.

The third shot is 4472, which was to take the train south, reversing into Gateshead shed from the east end.

That was only the second film I developed for myself using the cupboard under the stairs at home as a darkroom and a Patterson developing tank I'd bought at the local camera shop for 36s/6d. (I've still got it - unused for over 40 years, since 1981)

The first film I developed (on the same day) was of the evening before that, when J27 65894 was taking the last train up Silksworth bank, blowing smoke like a volcano. Unfortunately I was a bit new-fangled and under developed that film, meaning all the negatives from that run were thin, which was a bigger disaster because the evening light was awful and I was under-exposing anyway.

That was the first week back at school in the 6th form and a couple of mates and I persuaded the powers that we should be able to use the school darkroom and enlarger to print our photos rather than freezing our nuts off on the football field. 24-J27-65894-Climbing-to-Silksworth-coll,-8-Sept-67-fbook.jpg

40 years development in streamlining, Mallard and HST approaching King Edward Bridge West Junction. The HST will cross the Tyne on the KE Bridge and the A4 will continue on to the High Level Bridge. A bit of a bummer for those people on the right, July 1988

    17th July?

Coming into the Central off the High Level.

We ran up to the west end of Platform 8, while Mallard stood on Platform 9. As she pulled away our 10 year-old was enveloped in steam from the drain cocks and he was jumping up and down at the thrill of being 'steamed by Mallard'.

    Maybe two runs that weekend?

There isn't anything on 6 Bells Junction, but I found a post of Flikr with a shot taken at exactly the same time as mine, saying that it ran on a York - Carlisle - Newcastle - York circular trip on 17th July. (I was fishing the day before and had a good bag from Sweethope Lough which I though was worth a photo, with my first 5lb plus trout).

Ran both 16th & 17th. Same itinerary both days

    edit:
4468 ran four such tours on the S&C/Tyne Valley lines as part of the Mallard88 celebrations.

    16 & 17 July and 13 & 27 August.

The first three ran clockwise whilst the fourth ran anti-clockwise.
    I photographed all four runs.

    63395 & 90078 E 52G Sunderland 26 Nov 1966 708-Edit.jpg

In the depths of 52G Sunderland shed on 26 November 1966. The WD 2-8-0 90078 was shown as being officially withdrawn from service the following day but the Q6 remained in service until September 1967 prior to being purchased for preservation by NELPG.
Fast forward some 40 years or more and 63395 is photographed at work on NYMR metals. Not all doom and gloom, then.

August 1966 and Q6 63377 passes by Newcastle Central Station (left). A lot of the land to the right of picture has been developed over recent years, but interestingly, I've just had a look at this location on Google Earth and the structure behind the Q6, complete with the rather large water tank on its roof, is still there.

I'm almost certain that it has listed status. It's the station water tower.

This was it one day in 2017 when I spent some time at the station while my car was in for service on Scotwood Road. IMG_0622-fbook.jpg
