You could well be right. Can't find my one reference source which could confirm or deny the exact details. The 9" cylinder memory is seriously bugging me. You have to think they'd have been decidedly overboilered with 12" cylinders!

By the by .... W8's rebuild to A1x involved replacement of it's Drummond boiler, gained during it's stint on the LSWR as their No.734. I can't find if sibling (LSW No.735, wdn unrebuilt 1937) gained (and/or subsequently lost) a Drummond boiler, but confusingly, W8's gaining of an A1x boiler (Ryde 1932) seems not to have been counted as a full rebuild .... according to SREmG at any rate (where I've just noticed a cock-up regarding it's withdrawal date - actually 1963 - but confused with it's transfer back to the mainland in 1949). Cue theme tune to 'Soap'.

I can well understand that a leading bogie or pony truck is highly desirable above goods train speeds, but I can't see that merely removing coupling rods, leaving leading wheels of the original size on the same rigid wheelbase, would be any help at all.

It wasn't, but it seemed to be one of those things that Marsh got hung up on. He converted some E4 and E5 0-6-2T locos to 2-4-2T by the same process of just removing the front coupling rods; they were all rapidly converted back to conventional form.

They actually received smaller wheels (3'), but still the same fixed wheelbase...

It did - along with a Drummond chimney and cab-top cable auto-train gear. There's a photo of it p63 of "Stroudley and his Terriers".

"Waddon" (now in Canada) got a Wainwright pattern boiler (with Ramsbottom pattern safety valves) having been sold to the SECR; it was subsequently rebuilt back to more conventional form.

I've got a photo of it somewhere, somewhat careworn, still sporting its SE&CR ownership plate in 1930: it happened to be the last loco still running on the SR in pre-grouping livery, albeit the "wrong" pre-grouping livery!

Cylinder size on Terriers: it's a minefield (before you even get to considering how they changed after being bored out). Everything from 9" to 14" diameter. As a very general rule, 13" was standard; 9" were linered down on one of the push-pull equipped 2-4-0Ts; 10" on the other one (from memory); 12" to a number of the motor train-equipped Terriers in the Edwardian era; 14" on Fenchurch (and maybe one or two of the others; I'd have to look it up) for use as a shunting engine.

I was going to point this out! She went to the IoW and then to Embsay as a late replacement for Caley 419 which failed just before it was due to travel I believe.

Due to the failure of the Hall, the timetable for the event has been altered and can be found on the website

Ah that's a pity. I'll still be there in the morning for the first train from EGR. I'll be there one asleep in the corner most of the day after coming straight from a night shift!

Though I've not been behind the Hall yet, I'm quite looking forward to a five-SR flavoured loco weekend that we now benefit from!

Shame about the Hall, although I'm sure I'll get a chance to ride behind it at some point before or during Giants of Steam and hopefully still get some pictures of it in the yard on Sunday when I pop down.

Is there any plans to have Poplar and Stepney posed together at any point, given their varying A1X conditions with Improved Green liveries, as well as both facing North, or is Stepney remaining on display at the front of it's road in Steamworks?

    Great shots Paul.
Hoping to come down on Saturday.
    A couple of questions.
How do get to those locations (Rock Cutting, Freshfield Bank and Three Arch Bridge)?

The only one with public access is Freshfield Bank where a public footpath runs across the field. Park North of the Sloop Inn and take the footpath that heads North from the bend in the road.

The Rock Cutting 1 was with Landowners permission.Approaching Three Arch Bridge was lineside, no public footpath.

Are they still intending to run this bus service between EG and KC?

    Thanks Paul.
Guessed there were access issues as I’ve never found those locations on previous visits to the line.

One of the advantages of photo charters, you can get to places you normally can’t access

Does that mean she's out for the count for the rest of the weekend?
