The restoration of Bridgnorth Locomotive Works is almost complete and will enable everyone working in the facility to benefit from a lighter, brighter and safer workplace that also requires less energy to run. However, as the project nears completion and light pours into the facility, the state of the concrete floor has become an increasing concern.

Coating the 1,200 m2 surface with epoxy resin will not only enhance the floor visually, so it won't detract from the freshly painted walls and steelwork, but it will also further increase the safety of the facility. A more robust surface will prevent spills from contaminating the concrete and provide a surface that can be cleaned and kept in good condition, reducing slip hazards. Walkways and fire exits can also be marked out. In addition, the red coating will help reduce glare when welding.

An epoxy resin surface will have triple the life span of a standard sealed concrete finish when cared for well, reducing maintenance costs in the long term. Paid staff and volunteers are happy to help care for the surface to maximise its life span and keep everyone safe.

The team feels so strongly that this is the right solution that they have already pledged £3,000 toward the costs. However, we urgently need to raise the additional £12,000 needed by 31st July so that the floor can be coated before machinery, equipment and locomotives are moved back in. There will not be a second chance because epoxy resin cannot be laid once the facility is full and once the surface has been contaminated by inevitable spills, as it would not stick.

Please help us raise the funds needed for this special floor to keep the team who look after locomotives extra safe.

The appeal reached £9,430 (78% of the £12k target). Hopefully the Trust can find the remaining £2,570 rather than returning 65 donations.

Anyone know when we might hear about anything happening at the Autumn Steam Gala? The website doesn't seem to have a page up yet and not seen any mention of it anywhere for a gala 6 weeks or so away

I gather the brochure is being worked on at the moment. Hopefully something will appear shortly.

I just hope it's not going to be one of those home fleet only events, it will be an almighty shame since the Severn Valley hold such outstanding events!

I heard guests are still being negotiated.
It would be bad form to announce guests before you've sorted the contract out.

Have you tried to secure visiting locomotives for a gala, not exactly a surplus of available engines ? transport costs have gone up considerably so four visitors £40000 transport costs , Steam lots of loco's 3-4 days , coal costs £450 ton . There is an accountant having panic attacks . Not just for the SVR but for any railway

So true and then there is the challenge of trying to keep the ticket price to under £50.

plus the fact that everyones money is being squeezed by inflation . Petrol and Diesel have come down a but it looks like Gas and Electric going up this autumn . People will make decisions on the what they spend money on and where and recreational spend may well diminish

I, for one, would be happy to have a couple of small visiting locos with a varied timetable including freights and demonstations such as shunting displays, visits to the carriage shed etc. Rather like the spring galas used to be, and open house weekends still are to some extent.
Surely cheaper, and a better spectacle on this long branch line as the trains will look OK in both directions?
I'll run for cover...

Flights from UK airports are a lottery at present. Passengers who have had their travel plans disrupted will question if now is a good time to book again.
If they decide to holiday in the UK it will be good for British tourism and hopefully for our heritage railways. Fingers crossed. <BJ>

Steam events at locations on the line may help but each loco in steam needs a crew and fuel. Once you do that you might as well attach some coaches and run along the line.

I expect the SVR will sort something without our ideas!

A fair point. It would be interesting to compare visitor numbers of galas with small visiting locos to galas with guests such as Flying Scotsman and Tornado. <BJ>

No Sidmouth, I haven't had the privilege of organising such things.
However, I would rather try and give the enthusiasts a real shin dig and either succeed or fail at it, rather than not bother at all.

There does seem to be an issue on a number of threads of ignoring the economic realities of the world (let alone the UK) that we live in.
