    Nobody seems interested to be quite honest, yet there is still need for it. I don't know whether they still teach it in German factories now.

    No problem if you get it hot enough. Of course you have to reheat then to get the hardness back..but not heating it as much. I'll still have temperatures to heat to somewhere and the colour the steel turns to quench it. I don’t know about all these Chinese files these days. They're very poor in my opinion.

    Tools generally and hand tools in particular. Modern chisels and gouges especially are pure, unadulterated crap. If I need something these days, my first port of call is the old fella with a 2nd hand stall in Brighton Open Market. No website or anything like that!

    Totally agree...I also still have my dad's pattern makers tool chests..all Sheffield made chisels with boxwood handles. Old planes the lot.. sash cramps galore...even some horse glue...purely for "sniffing" these days....of course...

    Aah ... glue. My dad had some of those 'nesting' iron pots used to melt the suff. Unfortunately, not long after he popped his clogs, my younger brother returned from school as I moved out. Unfortunate for the hand tools. The power tools and scaffolding set* got flogged off.

    * Mecanno for grown ups.

    Interesting stuff Ian. I could be mistaken about the breathers still being present on Tornado but you are right about the grease escaping onto to back of the wheels, having had to clean an awful lot of it off the frames!

    Lots of progress this week - see https://www.theclanproject.org/Clan_News.php. We have placed an order with South Devon Railway Engineering Ltd for the assembly of the bogie wheelsets and are aiming to deliver to Devon in the first week of September

    The saga of the frames/frame extensions/firebox support stretcher bolts is now drawing to a conclusion. CTL Seal fitted the majority of the bolts last week and Generic Engineering delivered 8 more today which whould be fitted ths week.

    Another significant step forwards is looming closer, then we just need the pony truck and the frames will be mobile!!. Not that they need to go anywhere in a hurry yet.
    Great to see the continuing progress, well done lads.

    Keith and Alan are working on the pony truck drawings. Keith is deciphering the pony truck frame drawing which is quite difficult to read the detail. The BR minutes show that they were reluctant to generate separate plate drawings so the arrangement drawing details 34 different plates. By 1958 when the Mk 3 dragbox drawings were created, a drawing showing the separate plates was created together with a separate arrangement drawing. Alan has started on the frame keeps and the spring beam; the latter takes the upward thrist from the axlebox and transfers it to the tops of the coil springs. Originally intended to be a casting, the drawing shows that it was amended to be a stamping - yet only 2 were ever made for 71000. Again the BR minutes state that it was intended that the last batch of Britannias would have the coil sprung pony truck - but this didn't actually happen.

    We have an enquiry out at the moment for a budgetary estimate for the pony truck radial arm.

    Great stuff! Love it when lots of little bits suddenly turn into a big assembly

    I am slightly worried about the chap painting the wheel. He seems to able to get green paint out of a maroon paint tin...

    I can assure you that the paint in the can was in fact green. It is the non-corrosive primer we use as a first coat. The can has previously been used for red oxide when we were painting the LMS van body ends. I know this is correct as it is me that is wielding the paintbrush...

    My son's mate is currently an apprentice. He was sent to Rabarts for a can of red and white striped paint..... The guy in the paint shop sent him back to ask if it was horizontal or vertical stripes......

    In my research lab days, a common trick on new students was to introduce them to a chemical balance (weighing scales), identify some supposed defect and ask them to go to the stores for a long weight …
