I believe a fire fighting patrol road vehicle 4x4 is used. The track bed was built for double track so there is space to drive along side

Thanks - I’d wondered about driving alongside, but couldn’t see any adjacent roads hence wondering about a following rail vehicle.

That's exactly it. The old down formation is maintained as an access track for the likes of PW and emergencies and is frequently in use for the former. For the majority of the length of the line there is no convenient road access for such things. There is a safe system of work to ensure that the vehicles don't encroach on the operational line.

How do they cope with the bridges in Newtondale that have been rebuilt to single tracks?

I think most of us will, I do get the feeling there will be those who won’t quite understand though.

TBF with the gradients and loads on the NYMR, even a strong loco has to be driven fairly enthusiastically just to keep to time!

To judge by the comparatively small areas reported affected, North Yorks Fire are to be congratulated on their timely response. Do we know, were any NYMR (or other) 'First Responders' already on the ground attempting to contain these blazes ahead of the Fire Brigade's arrival?

Local residents mentioned in two of the incidents. Yorkshire Water imposing hose pipe ban in two weeks, why not immediately?

Are water companies allowed to do that without notice?

I'd imagine some government diktat under some 'special measures' or other gives such authority. I'm certainly insufficiently well-heeled to place the question before a judge!

No, we need an effective Minister for Drought - like in 1976. Appointed one day, rained shortly after - the most effective Government minister ever!.

JRM is many things, but effective isn't one of them...

    Anyway, back to the NYMR.
