Scots Guardsman at Alnmouth on the return Edinburgh Christmas Market, 21 December 2021.

I never imagined we'd see the day when a shot like this was even possible. A train at high speed at night.

My first camera couldn't even do that on a sunny day! Scots-Guardsman-(5)-fbook.jpg

The ISO range on a modern camera is mind boggling, I think the Nikon D6 goes up to 3.28m ISO so pictures of black cats in coal cellars are a possibility! Being serious I doubt if the image quality at that extreme would be all that useable.
What camera and settings were you using for this shot? What noise reduction software did you use?

Canon R5. I wouldn't have dreamt of it with any of my previous bodies, including the 5D iv. Even so, because I'd underestimated how much light spill there was from the LED lights (there was none), so that the light pools only extended to the edge of the platform and not onto the tracks, I was getting on for 2 stops underexposed, increasing the noise by a lot. A trip there the night before to test out my settings on Azumas worked fine, but there's a lot of difference between a white train and a BR Green Scot. I always shoot in full manual.

ISO 12800, 1/640 sec, F2.8. If I'd put the ISO a bit higher, say 25,600 there'd have been much less noise to remove with my Neat Image software.

This is what it looked like before the Neat Image. Scots-Guardsman-(5)-nosharp-fbook.jpg

That’s impressive, even the original is not too bad. I used to use Neat Image but I now use Topaz software, I think noise reduction is the least impressive facility in Photoshop. My current camera is a Nikon D800.

I've got the Topaz Denoise too, but I tend to use the Neat Image for day to day stuff. It's less agressive and gives a less waxy image. I used Denoise on that pic and it wasn't as good as the Neat Image, I thought.
