I couldn't tell you - I'm sure someone else could - But sure it was on the MHR website - I will see if I can find the link - Although the new Cylinder will have to match the other? Exact measurements and bored out exactly the same?

Can I ask if it goes over this will the other side need stripping down to be cleaned and possibly re-bored?

There's some guy on the NYMR forum (don't know who) who is claiming that it was not the core plug and due to priming, citing evidence of an over-full boiler when the loco arrived at Ropley. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFDWpaC9OIM) If you look at the photos on the MHR website you can see that one of the core plugs is missing/displaced. Hydraulicking is unlikely to have displaced the piston and bent a piston rod in the way it has as it will act on the full area of the piston. It certainly has all the hallmarks of a solid object being at the bottom of the cylinder to me. What I haven't seen from any photos published is the evidence of witness marks on the cylinder cover to confirm it. Priming could have displaced a weakly fitted core plug in the first place, though. I'm not saying it did, just that it could have!

I look forward to reading an official and definitive report sometime so that we can stop speculating.

Which cylinder cover are you refering to Steve, front or rear?
I agree with you that there are more questions than answers at the present time and I too await an official report with interest.

Why would this be made public? Surely it's a private matter between the owner, insurance company and the railway?

Obviously if it is something as basic as a core plug coming adrift through no other influences then such circulation may not be appropriate. But if it is in fact something more involved than that and lessons can be learned, it could be something that could be usefully circulated to other locomotive owners/railways to prevent such occurences in the future.

Look at the checks that were advised to take place following, using an off the top of my head example, the blowback on 75029 at the NYMR.

Have to agree with your last comment Stewie. BRSLOG were made aware of the problem on 75029 very quickly. Owners of certain locos were informed and some similar problems were identified on a couple of locos. This was prior to the RAIB report on the incident.

I can understand there being advisory notices to owners of similar locos in the event of something untoward being found other than simply a core plug coming adrift. It's just the phrase 'we can stop speculating', which I took to mean 'we, the armchair brigade of Nat Pres, can stop speculating', seem to elevate this forum to a lofty position which, in my opinion and it has to be said the opinion of the movers and shakers on most preserved railways, it doesn't justify.

Sorry, Chessie, but that is the wrong approach. Why is there a need for total secrecy? Common sense says that such a serious incident as this should be fully investigated and the results of that investigation made available to other heritage railways. This is how repeat incidents are avoided and incidents can easily turn into accidents. It is not a question of establishing blame but establishing cause. Certainly, if I were the insuring party, I would want to know why and do my best to make sure that I don't have to pay out on a similar incident on another loco in a couple of years time. It's about reducing the risk and I hope that this does happen.

I think you need to read my last post again Steve - I'm agreeing with what you're saying but the way the post I was commenting on was put made it seem as if informing the members of Nat Pres was the priority.

I think that our posts crossed. I wasn't specifically relating to those on Nat Pres by the use of the word 'we'. Perhaps I should choose my words more carefully next time! :-#

That is so true that it hardly bears discussion. Insurance companies and the like will be more supportive if they can see that the "industry" is attempting to keep its house in order and reduce the possibility of such incidents. Secrecy is only necessary to avoid embarrassment. Which is prevalent in certain circles, as the same names and places cropping up repeatedly bears witness. What is at stake is the cost of insurance premiums at least, and in the worst case restrictions on heritage activity, and/or avoidable fatalities. It's clear that the steam heritage movement has been quite fortunate so far. I don't think many people would like to see the results of a cylinder bursting as it passes a crowded platform.

I wouldn't bother. 99% of readers could understand perfectly well what you meant. It was clear from the quote that the objection was to the results of any report being made public.

I'm not going sink to national preservation level anymore and have an argument with you for all to be seen, if you have a problem that you want to rationally discuss Chris I'm at Ropley tomorrow

Then Darren should you not have sent a PM to me instead of shouting out to all and sundry?.

Finally I will be at Medstead tomorrow.

With the cylinder totally destroyed and the forces that were needed to cause such a catastrophic failure could there be damage to other parts of the loco like rods or even distorting of he frames. Or was all the kinetic energy released throw the total destructions of the cylinder.
