LNER Quad set of coaches

    Hi All

    I have added a photo of a Quad set of coaches the end coach numbered E47914E at Louth in 1952 Can anybody give me any information on these sets please

    Gresley developed the use of a single bogie between two coaches in the early 1900s. The Great Northern Railway started building the "Quad-Arts' in 1910 onwards for surburban use. Gresley also developed 'Quint-arts' for longer distance work and other uses for the LNER after the grouping.

    I can remember riding in Quad-art sets on the North Woolwich/Stratford/Palace Gates services in the late 1950s, before DMUs came in - I really must get to the North Norfolk Railway to have a ride in their recently restored Quad-art set!

    Dragging up an old thread here.... However if anyone has ever been interested in the (now unique) 1920's Gresley articulation arrangement that is present, buried deep in between the close coupled coaches of the Quad-Art set, then this week's North Norfolk C&W update will be of interest, as we successfully split the set in half for the first time since they were restored. This was to swap out some wheelsets, and proved a fascinating task for all involved.

    Interesting. What is the arrangement & routeing of the vac pipes between the bodies at a common bogie?

    So the solid vacuum pipe on the body, instead of exiting through the headstock, points downwards centrally just about where the coupling drawgear rubbers would be on a normal coach. There is then a flexible, about the size of a normal vac hose, which passes downwards through the bogie, between the wheelset and the centre bolster. This flexible handles the bogie swivel. This in turn connects to another solid pipe which is U shaped (bolted to the bogie frame) and passes below the bolster. The same arrangement is then repeated on the other side.
