Agree, although I hope they are not trying to end overnight running by stealth.
I enjoyed last year being able to reserve a compo.

It's a unique highlight albeit only of interest to a limited number of fans.
Traveling through the valley at dawn is exceptional and for it to be removed from the calendar would most likely result in me ending my membership in a petulant but necessary protest.

Its also marginal revenue for the SVR hence if the cost of running (given the rising price of coal) is not covered by the extra income from night travellers then it well behoves the SVR not to run it. Sadly heritage running is no longer a simple case of running trains for pleasure but running trains to generate income for long term operation. That means a revised ethos - if it doesn't pay it doesn't run ! Full Stop !

Well yes, but take that too far and you make the same mistake Beeching made, shutting too many branch lines and you end up with fewer people buying tickets on the main lines. If the Valley were doing overnights, I'd almost certainly buy a ticket now. As it is, I'm not sure if I'll go or not. I'm not saying they should run it for my benefit, and I've not felt a need to moan about it, but the fact is it's put a question mark over whether I go at all, and may well have lost them what, maybe £80 all in as I'd probably have bought a 2 day ticket plus some food along the way. Of course railways should carefully look at finances, but it's not always as straightforward as it first seems.

Feels odd to judge a gala on whether there is overnight running when only one line does it , I need my sleep and prefer my own bed so whilst I’ve stayed late I’ll go back home so I can return and enjoy the daytime

    Good morning all,

Just booked my tickets for the Gala next month. As a member, was a bit puzzled regarding any discount for tickets. Paul Corner at the railway, came up trumps with this advice:

...."On your membership card you will have a U number. You would need to go through the normal booking process liked bellow then add you u Numbers only into the discount box before paying"...

Worked for me although you don't need to include 'u' just the numbers after. Saved nearly 17 quid off a 3 day ticket!

Just need some rain the Worcestershire and Shropshire now....!"
    Cheers, Andy

That discount doesn’t make sense, members discount is 33% for all normal days, the 40s event and both spring & autumn galas, which would be more than £17?

Apologies, my maths is rubbish! Full price for 3 days is £79.20, I paid £55.06 so £24 saved.

It would be interesting to know how much revenue was generated by selling compartments last year. It was a bit of a dog's breakfast at first because they changed the set so your reserved compo wasn't designated as such. But I am willing to pay a premium if it means I can sleep on the seat.

The timetable shows 9 locos working each day. The website lists 2 visitors (45231 and 41312) plus 7 SVR-based locos (4930, 2857, 1501, 7714, 70, 43106 and 75069). Does this mean that there are no further visitors to be announced? (The website still says "up to four visiting locomotives")

Possibly having 2 of the home locos as standby if anything went wrong perhaps?

I've had a nosey at the timetable for the gala, and whilst it does indeed indicate 9 locos working the majority of the services, a 10th is rostered for a single round trip in the late hours on both Friday & Saturday, including the last train at 22:05 from Kidderminster.

With this in mind, It's likely that one more visitor will be announced to complete the standard gauge fleet. In regards to a 4th visitor, I'd bank on it having something to do with the narrow gauge at Highley...
