Riddles! Are you serious? The man who couldn't grasp the importance of sustained power outputs in excess of 2000ihp, the importance of high capacity, low back pressure exhaust systems plus various other lapses.
    I don't own a horse , but if I did, I wouldn't have trusted Riddles to design a half-decent cart for it.

Anyway who needs a 'gang of five'? If you want to modify a P2 pick either Chapelon or Porta or maybe even De Caso. It would be a genuine step forward to have a locomotive capable of delivering in excess of 4000hp on the UK network.

Oh, my choice for the engine I would like to see, restored and at work naturally, 231E-41.

It would be interesting to develop a steam locomotive type never built in reality, then build a second class member using the knowledge gained since then to compare the two...

say build a 91xxx 2-8-2 then build a second example incorporated with Porta, Chapleon etc's design ideas since.

Building a 5AT is nice and all, but it's historical significance is lost in that it's an improved existing design, building a "locomotive that never were" and then improving it to latest technology...

Now just need to find £10m to fund it.

Thanks ADB968008, Youre thinking along similar lines as myself, The reasons for seeing my wish loco's list for the for the first time is generally that they did exist , but do so no longer In some cases they we're beatiful but flawed / did not perform to their potential and should they be brought into existence to stand shoulder to shoulder with preserved Locos, any alterations to design to rectify this would be based on improvements contemporary to their time period.

Whilst the true potential of steam power/ efficiency was perhaps never realised (or needed to) in this country the 5AT or some foreign masterpiece simply doesnt cut it for a lot of people any more than a class 66 Diesel. Its not something that boys aged 7-77 want to buy a model of, or see gleaming (or grimy) at the head of a rail tour, or chuffing up and down preserved line, neither is at a treasured memory for someone.

Im sure there is a place for all this 242 A1, its Steam Jim but not as we know it. Part of the charm of the scene is still being seeing these old girls dig in a bit, yes ?, cant see a 4000 hp engine struggling with anything less than 800 tonnes, thats a lot of seats your not going to fill....

  5. We all know riddles degsignd the WD 2-8-0 so imagine if he was given the go ahead for a BR standard 8f with better materials and more refinements that would be a nice bit of kit

Not quite sure how you are going to manage a 'Loco that never was', there are always going to be major parts that will be very similar to ones alread built. To be different it would have to be so radical as probably be unrealistic. :-k

Stainless? It would take something rather special to put up with the combination of thermal and dynamic stresses?

Yes, perhaps I was "entering the realm of phantasy there, Jones". Are there any modern alternatives to the traditional materials used in boiler construction?

Also I'm a little surprised that no-one has mentioned the Turbomotive? For a locomotive that varied significantly from the traditional, I understand that it was quite successful?

If 46203 makes a reappearance part of your wish will be granted.
Since 1958 Princess Margaret Rose has carried LMS boiler #9100 that was also carried by 6202 between 29/06/35 and 22/07/36.

Lady of Legend..seem to have been waiting a long time for this one, while Duchess of Hamilton streamlined will be a treat.

If wishful thinking of new builds then rather than than than the Peppercorn A1 wouldn't a Raven A2 have been a bit more different, or as previously mentioned the Turbomotive......or the Bear, if anywhere could be found to run it with all the current gauging restrictions [-o<

I'd settle for a Stanier tank around Manchester with some surburban coaches borrowed from the KWVR...

Then finally I could see what all these books surrounding my dad's desk all my child hood was really like !

7229 would be fantastic and as you say is interestingly different to the other two - sadly suspect that it is unlikely to happen in the short to medium term, although I would love to be proven wrong.

EDIT - Giving this a little more thought, would 7229 not actually make a good addition to the national collection, example of the many heavy freight tank locomotives (sure there are already some in the NRM, but cannot think of the top of my head) and in fact in unrestored condition would also tick the box for an example of Barry condition?

Now we are talking, although in light of the general apparent shrinking of gauge on the big railway, not sure if they would fit anywhere.

    Oh I can dream though!
