No Chance, it'll run straight off the top and we'll be bone dry again by tomorrow. Needs a few weeks of consistant rain I reckon.

I see the railway says it is running to Whitby tomorrow using 2 locos, I assume that must be T & T?

So how does that work if the National Network is shut down?

I missed that, looks like a weekend to weekend with a spot of hiking as well then. Domestic authority says she's up for it.

Intriguing question. I'm not sure how it can happen unless Nunthorpe box is being manned. Is anyone (? @Steve) able to explain the arrangements in place.

Don’t know the ins and outs but seemingly Whitby trains could run but had to use platform 1 which required them to be top and tailed.

Since I asked the original question I read on the Spa Valley thread they could not run to Eridge due to the strike. That of course may be due to the station being locked when Southern do not operate, I do not know. Few years since I have been to Whitby but is it always unlocked?
With apologies for a little thread drift (& a fear of waking someone up) I wonder if the SR trial service to Wareham was running this year if it could have operated to Wareham when on a strike day nothing comes west of Southampton. Although of course economically there would be no reason whatsoever to do so.

If Oxted signal box is closed, the Spa Valley cannot run to Eridge.

Thanks that does answer that one, do I assume then there is no sort of "token" arrangement with the box then?

Presumably a token is removed under the authority of the signaller after the last train the day before the strike, before Nunthorpe box is closed ? IIRC a similar arrangement is in place for the Welsh Highland Railway's Cae Pawb crossing, where a release is granted before Machynlleth signalling centre closes which enables WHR services to run freely over the crossing.

    1) Wareham station does not have lockable gates on either platform.
    2) Suspect the Signalling Managers operating Basingstoke Rail Operations Centre on RMT strike days can only concentrate their limited personnel on the section terminating/originating at Southampton. I'm not sure they'd answer the 'phone if Corfe Castle signal box rang to see if any train could get to Worgret Junction and Wareham - but, as you rightly point out, it would be economic suicide to operate on strike days.

Nunthorpe was manned for the day, trains were Top and Tailed as this negates the need to use the ground frame at whitby (iirc the trains also ran into 1 at Grosmont) This was preferrable to NR as there would be no maintenance staff available should an issue arise with the frames.

    Just released statement regarding 80135

Following a generous legacy donation from Mr Clifford Luff that was specifically to be directed towards the overhaul of a steam locomotive, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has announced that the funds will go towards the overhaul of BR Standard 4 Tank No. 80135.

Along with the remaining funds that the NYMR has from the Bridge and Wheels Appeal the heritage railway is now able to restart the overhaul of the historic locomotive that was built in Brighton and first entered service in April 1956.

Tenders are currently being sought from external contractors to manufacture the replacement inner firebox using materials already in NYMR stock as well as a complete boiler overhaul. The locomotive's frames and running gear will also be restored and finished off.

Chris Price, CEO of the NYMR said: “We are extremely grateful to Mr Clifford Luff for remembering the NYMR in his will. Whilst it is hard to predict exact timescales of the locomotive’s completion, this generous legacy has enabled us to bring 80135’s overhaul up the priority list.

“It will be wonderful to see the two sister locomotives (80135 and 80136) working alongside each other for the pleasure of our visitors and members. In these difficult times it's nice to be able to announce this good news story and I am personally over the moon that we can now once again reignite the overhaul of this locomotive with the resources in place to see it through to the end. 80135 will be completed ready to operate trains right through the NYMR to Whitby as a network rail registered locomotive.”

Good news indeed for a loco that has been out of traffic for far too long.

I must be going senile! I could have sworn I have seen a pic of "Repton" being steam tested ready for a return to service, but I have no idea where it was and cannot find it now! Can anyone confirm that it has happened?

It had one last week, and needs another this week to test a few repairs that were made over the weekend. There's pictures on one of the facebook pages.
