Anyone out to see Tornado tomorrow 24th March ? the times give Wincobank Junction 9.40 and a stop at Mill Race Junction 9.47 to 10.26 not exactly sure where this is. I've been on the train to Sheffield this morning could be a couple of places between Meadowhall and Sheffield. Any ideas?

Mill Race Jn is at the end of Attercliffe Viaduct headding towards Meadowhell where the loop lines separate off the main and the line from the scrap yard comes in.

The grapevine has it that 222003 will be named after Tornado while she is at Sheffield. I can't quite believe that there is no publicity about this, from either the Trust or EMT. I'm going to go down for that, then hopefully get somewhere down the line to catch the second leg to Barrow hill.

Can anyone confirm or deny that 222003's 'nameplate' was in actual fact a piece of sticky back plastic?

What's wrong with a good old fashioned piece of painted pig iron being bolted onto the side?

Incidentally, are there any pictures of this event at all? There's not even a mention on the A1T's website.

nothing was said anywhere as far as I can see. As far as news goes, it made the Sheffield Star, that's it. Shockingly, considering it seems to have been their idea, EMT have not even said anything on thier news section.

some pics I have found of the ceremony:

Don't forget that a nameplate counts as a change to rolling stock, therefore a metal plate requires more assurance that it won't fall off. As it is a 'nice to have', a nameplate nowadays will normally be a sticker as it is cheaper and quicker to apply.

It doesn't even look like a sticker, it's more like an extremely thin transfer, it looks painted on in this image:

I have a question. Apparently the multiple unit numbered 222003 was chosen because the front coach is numbered 60163 which now carries the Tornado sticker, so...how does multiple unit numbering work? If that single coach is moved to another set, does it take the 222003 number with it? Now that vehicle 60163 carries the nameplate, does whatever set that single vehicle is attached to become 222003 Tornado always, even if every other coach allocated is different from 'as delivered/rostered'? Do multiple unit sets derive their numbers from a single lead vehicle? And if so, seeing as both ends have an engine and motors (and all vehicles in between), which end? As an aside, if that is the case, I would have thought it would be the vehicle at the first class end, but it seems the 60163 coach is a standard class cab end. At least in HSTs you have a power car and a trailer, so logically there is still a 'locomotive' with a number.

Nominally the end vehicles are the 'unit' numbers and centre coaches can be reformed to create a whole unit.

Even tho both end vehicles have differnt numbers still.
Not so long ago 2 of our 365s were temporly re-formed so one end said 365501 and the other 365505, 3 out of the 4 cars were 505 with the other driving coach from 501.

In which case, the temporary reform will still take one unit as the the number. In that case it would be 365505 as that constituted the majority of the unit.

    Dan
