A (different) Black 5 plus a (different) Britannia up the Lickey on the third day of GBIII back in 2010 caused much excitement. Will this bring out similar crowds?
    Edit: corrected a typo.

I doubt it, now that the spectacle is marred by the OLE.

Is the Marches tour tomorrow due to be steam hauled both ways?

Yes, I saw that too. I’m not aware there’s a loco in Bristol at the moment so unless one comes down on the ecs I assume it’ll be a diesel Northbound.

Sorry but I couldn't understand the significance of the above. I understood Britannia was in the west country and would work the train both ways. Is that true or what is it likely to be?

That is what is supposed to happen and it is what all the above movements suggest will happen. But the point remains that the RTT entry for the outward train itself shows it pathed at 95mph throughout, and simply reversing at BTM:

    upload_2022-9-6_19-32-8.jpeg

Normally, when there is a change from diesel/electric to steam power, RTT states that the train is pathed at 60 or 75mph from that point.

Indeed, I follow that, but the actual timings of the Bristol - Shrewsbury leg look much the same as those of the two previous WMEs in August which did have steam involvement, albeit minimal because of the extreme heat and dryness at the time. So, I'm doubtful whether the mention of the higher max. speed on RTT means very much. I see Rail Advent has it down as 70000 both ways but I don't know on what basis.

I agree. It's strange that RTT reads as it does, but I don't think it is significant.

Likely a quirk of the system, I suspect the 'notes' are manually entered.
    Anyway :-
    • 47853 + 47593 to Bristol Temple Meads
    • 70000 'Britannia' + 47853 to Shrewsbury
Alas I can't get out to see this one today :(

'Britannia' was very noisy climbing Horfield bank on the climb out of Bristol. What a bark!!

The 47 was ticking over but gave no assistance to the tour. It was well worth tackling the morning rush hour traffic to see it. <BJ>

Here's my footage of Britannia roaring up Filton and Llanvihangel Bank before speeding past Moreton on Lugg on the morning run to Shrewsbury. I hope you enjoy the video.
