Oswald's remark on the CFE thread reminded me that we had a birthday boy on the Scarborough Spa, Thursday, he was to celebrate his hundredth birthday the following day, Friday. If I'm as fit and compos mentis as him at 100 I'll be well pleased. He was presented with a cake and the stewards' choir led the rest of the coach in an iffy rendition of Happy Birthday.

I would be grateful if anyone travelling on today's Dalesman can record and then post a time for the climb from Ormside to the Aisgill summit sign. I am keeping a record of all posted times for the year. [Pleases see post #63 above for full details].
Thanks in anticipation and enjoy. Remember, "Oswald needs YOUR time!"

    Posted elsewhere.
Due to late notice operational issues, we are unable to run the Class 40 diesel engine on tomorrow's diesel part of the Dalesman trip as previously advertised. Therefore it will run with one of our diesel engines from our fleet. The STEAM part of the journey is unaffected.

We will try to rearrange the Class 40 for a later date.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience.

First and foremost, I am sure that all our thoughts are with the family and friends of the passenger on another trip who sadly died earlier today. It does, as always, put things into perspective.

After yesterday evening's storm today's forecast was much better, but still with the chance of light rain. Mrs W and I (well me really) had planned to go to Settle station but with the possibility of rain Horton in R with a guaranteed parking space almost on the platform seemed a better bet. We arrived about 30 minutes before the train was due. There was no Arcow Quarry train today and the Leeds-Carlisle was on time, so no reason to be late.

With nothing in front BIL left Hellifield 10E and was 8E at Settle Jn - "Good!", I hear you say. But just hang on, running this early BIL could arrive at Horton in R about the same time as the Carlisle-Leeds train. The service train was RT at Blea Moor, next a distant whistle from BIL, then the unit coming into sight . . . surely not! Set up at the north end of the southbound platform there was little to do but wait and hope. The unit arrived and stopped, if no-one gets on or off there might be a chance, but of course people were waiting to get on, then there was a problem with the doors and the guard had to walk down the platform. BIL was almost upon us. Quick tripod move and 2 seconds later BIL shot into the frame, the train hurried by (it always seems faster going away) and on the back was 37.676 "Loch Rannoch" contributing away to its heart's content. 6E, 41mph, 15C and no rain. 40 miles there, 40 miles back and all for 30 seconds of snatched video. However, perspective Oswald.

I’ve tried a bit of swearing in the past, plenty of moaning, even sulking, but nothing seems to work. Any tips, Shep?

The Dalesman 8th September: 35018 load 11+1. Mega shovage from 37676, starting from Appleby time from post 275 to 259¾ 16 min 12 sec. Speed at Ormside 62 and at summit 52½ mph. Such a time requires both locomotives to have been working hard.
