30th Anniversary S&C Steam Special 17/09/22

Not seen a thread for this tour which was supposed to run this Saturday the 17th but it was reorganised to the 17th of October apparently but a chap I know travelling on the tour has been told it’s now running as planned this Saturday after the strike action was cancelled.

 

It appears the website has now been updated again to show the 17th September. It was showing 15th October last week.

 

For the less enlightened amongst us what is it the 30th anniversay of?

 

I think it's the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Settle and Carlisle Railway Development Company.

When was the last time we had a morning southbound run over the S&C ? Could be some memorable scenes on offer if the weather plays ball.

 

22nd May 2013 with 44932. Before then... possibly right back to 1987.

Better known ones are:

• 26th September 1987 - 34092

There haven't been many.

 

Don't remind me. Stunning forecast, lovely drive up from Hertfordshire... Not a single shot in sun! Langwathby was the most frustrating, as the whole scene except the line was in sun. Even got stuffed by the tiniest rogue cloud on Wilpshire bank in the evening for the Duchess.

A rare morning run south over the S&C with stops at Appleby and Settle to pick up passengers; fingers crossed for good weather. I haven't seen the return path on RTT (yet) but hope to watch the train around Skipton in the evening. An afternoon path from 10A to Hellifield and a later one back to 10A may mean steam off at Hellifield on the return

I would be grateful if anyone travelling can record, then post a time for the climb from Ormside to the Aisgill summit sign. I am keeping a record of all posted times for the year. Correct. The stock has to stay in Carlisle overnight because of engineering possessions, so that is the only way to get 46115 home that evening.

A beautiful chilly morning sees No. 46115 'Scots Guardsman' heading the 'S&C Steam Special' away from Ribblehead to Hellifield and onwards to York with Mick Kelly driving and Clive Gault firing

 

Footage of 46115 on the final couple of miles to Ais Gill this morning in full sun. Completely worth it just for that.
