Yes but a better camera can give you many things, more features, more complex, more megapixels, more modes, faster shooting (if not using SLR) i can only take 1 shot every 3 seconds whereas a SLR equivalent could take about 10! I started out with a small Casio QV-R61,really poor, because my photography was poor,i had no idea what i was doing,i then moved onto a more complex Compact camera the Canon SX100 IS,now i have tried a DSLR (S5500) and am now hoping in a couple of months to move onto a higher grade SLR,probably in the Canon EOS range, one of the XXXD models.....

    Cheers,
    Mark

None of this means you take a better picture.

David, still using a 'starter' camera

Ive been playing with my camera outside a few moment's ago and been trying all the different settings and amazed at the Differences in the frame rates/shutter speeds? Obviously for a better shot you use a slower shutter speed/setting on the camera?

Andy, It depends if the subject is moving or stationary, and if it is moving, how fast is it moving.

to freeze motion you need a higher (faster) shutter speed. but to get enough light this will give you a larger aperture and therefore less depth of field.

As with all things in life its a trade off - decide what you want and then set the camera accordingly.

Then you have the fact that if the subject is moving fact you take a shot and wait for the camera to come back to life before you can take the next shot?

Isn't a faster/higher shutter speed going to give you a hazy picture for something at speed? this is why I have been playing with the camera and the settings all evening..

you can always pan your camera, sharp shot on a loco, and a blurred background.. It takes practice though

Thanks twofnine - In playing with the camera this evening I have managed to get it to do this - Although I think a tripod is seriously going to be the next port of call.... Because when you think you have got the camera steady - It actually isn't....

Over the years 34007, Ive learnt to do without a tripod.

I understand you are lucky in having a daughter.. But when my eldest Son was young, he enjoyed coming out on trains with me, and the end of the day; I had to carry him home.. So excess baggage was left behind =P~

Some settings require the camera to be very steady and in the manual says use of a tripod and i'm inclined to agree. I've gone through the manual and attacked the settings and there is hell of alot of settings and different appertures that the camera can use and the shutter speed differs on this...

As for you're son, if my daughter as you're son enjoyed his time as much as I hope my daughter will with me - I will be one very happy soul!!!

So what excess bagage was this? You're tripod? You could give it away in this day and age - I for one am in need of one....

It was either the tripod, or my Son left behind...My Wife would have killed me if I had just come home with my tripod! ](*,)

How long do you have to wait before you take another photo Andy? Some times Andy you are better off taking one good photo than taking two or three average photos? Most times when I'm at the MHR photographing moving locos I set the shutter speed at 1/500 of a second.

Lee, how about you give me an answer? I'm new to this camera, so any experience will be much appreciated? Lee how about meeting up and giving me a crash course <So to speak>

I'm getting there - But if you know the camera then experience is next to nothing!;-)
    Cheers

The exact opposite - the faster the shutter speed the shorter period the shutter is open so the less distance the object being photed will have moved. Long shutter speed means more movement means more blurring.
