Thanks for that bit of info. I am half remembering a Railway Modeller article c. 1971 which referred to the difference between 'Pallion' and the rest. Having seen the article the last thing I expected to see was 'Roker' and 'Pallion' in Surrey!

Last i heard the remains of 2352 ended up at Bryn Engineering Blackrod and was effectively broken up...

Was there in November 2020 according to Google maps, but from a bit of Facebook sleuthing it appears to have gone. Not that there appeared to be much left - wheels, frames and a lot of rust.

2352 has indeed been broken up for parts, a lot f it went to Brechin according to adverts of bits on Facebook last year and a freind bought the chimney. Not the first industrial to go, and it won't be the last.

Remember that AB2352 was the knackered left over bits from the restoration of a sister loco. It was probably kindest to salvage any usable parts to benefit other Barclays as described above.

Less egregious for it to be scattered to the winds as there are plenty of Barclay standard tanks across the UK and Australia and it still serves a purpose in them.

I understand that the tube and stay spacing are slightly different but with an external casing you wouldn't spot the difference. The steam production rate might even get the loco to crawl at prototypical speeds for heavy freights...

In April 2021 AB1719, 'Lady Nan', was failed with a holed main steam pipe. The old pipe was cast and considered beyond repair. A fabricated replacement has been fitted. Also following examination it was found necessary to replace the two smokebox steam pipes, again with fabrications. We finally finished the reassembly today and will soon undertake an in-house steam test to prove all is OK prior to inspection by our boiler inspector.

Following steam test last Saturday on AB 1719, 'Lady Nan' we found a bit more steam from the drain cocks with regulator closed than we would have expected. So today she has been taken into the workshop where dome cover, regulator parts and J pipe have been removed pending investigation.

Beyer Peacock 1827 of 1879 had her boiler lifted at Foxfield today for the start of a ten year overhaul. Hopefully it won't be too long before she's back, the boiler inspector should be coming to do his worst shortly!

During the second test and while moving the loco to the shed a loud pop was heard followed by steam everywhere. After examination it was found that the gasket between steam pipe flange and smokebox tubeplate had failed. This has been replaced and another test will be undertaken soon.

I was under the impression that gaskets were not allowed on the live steam circuit.

Well, you are under the wrong impression! Quite acceptable in low pressure steam circuits, indeed I've worked with these in 450 psi systems. It all depends on the design of the gasket material, the fit up of the joint face and adequate pre-tensioning and follow up. It is a sad fact that the best gasket material is asbestos but, for all of the well known and very unfortunate reasons , this can no longer be used.

It's quite usual practice. That's why manufacturers provide gasket materials suitable for high temperatures and pressures. They wouldn't waste their time if people couldn't use them.

    Bagnall 2746 The Duke

We had hoped to get the tank on a couple of weeks ago, but there was still work to do to fit the whistle, so it has had to be put off. The locomotive is now in red undercoat and looks very well.

The main steam pipe from the front tubeplate to the cylinder block has been a bottleneck, we had intended to use a copper pipe, but it seems the correct grade and size is simply not to be had, so we have reluctantly agreed to a steel one, to be made by Newtons of Cromford. This involves making a emplate to match the old (and terminally thin) copper pipe, and then fabricating a steel pipe from formed sections to suit. We have decided to order two so that we will have one on the shelf for the future.

Would any Austerity owners like to join in to bring the cost down on a production run?

    Tim

We undertook an in house steam test of AB 1719, 'Lady Nan', today and I am pleased to say that it was successful. We will now invite the boiler inspector to do the formal steam test.

Likewise ex Port of Par Bagnall 2572 Judy has passed the in-house steam test and awaits a visit from the boiler inspector. Judy has been out of service since 2018 when it was stopped for its ten year exam. A new front tubeplate and tubes were fitted by a local boiler repair company with mechanical work and repainting carried out by staff and volunteers at the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Judy is owned by the Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum and on permanent loan to the Cornish Steam Locomotive Preservation Society. It's intended to use it for steam heating service as a part of the Santa by Steam events over the Xmas period. Trains will be worked by another CSLPS loco, Ministry of Supply type " Austerity" Bagnall 2766 currently in WD livery as No 75178.

As an update on this, Judy is now back in full working order and will be in use together with Bagnall 2766 and pannier L92 ( on hire from the SDR) for the Bodmin and Wenford's Winter Steamup to be held on the 28th of December.
