I believe several members of this forum have referred to it as this which I find rather disrespectful, whilst 60163 doesn’t have the history of something built before 1960, it’s certainly made a lot of history during its first 14 years of its life. Possibly more than some other loco’s have despite their seniority.

Maybe it was just the hype people were getting bored with? Some don't like their "in your face" attitude but it got an engine built.

I'm still waiting for that magic moment when the boiler is dropped into 2007's frames. Then one day I can take my Godson onto the footplate, point to several major components and say "I sponsored/paid for those" :)

Bold statement concerning the 'London & Nearly Everywhere Railway. ..... I give you the WM&CQR Though I'll grant you more of an "outpost" than a "network" as such.

I think jealousy maybe? As I say what the A1 trust have achieved with 60163 within its short life so far has been pretty remarkable, you look at what’s happening with 2007 compared to the other P2 group, you have to say this a group of people that gets things done.
Sir I very much hope, we’re able to have a pint together when 2007’s complete and you can show me what you’ve sponsored! :)

Reuse of the LNER name makes it...an LNER name!

As I said before, this smacks of having nothing better to do...

I've said this time and time again - be respectful to locos and loco owners. It's not an easy job looking after our charges and everyone has their pet engine and interest. Denigrating others like that in public is petty.

"Prince of Wales" was already an LNER name before the A1/A3 was built - used on the ex-GC D11, apparently throughout its life from 1920 to 1960.

The PoW's Scottish title, "Duke of Rothesay", was used on an ex-NB C11 Atlantic, although that had a short life from 1921 to 1937. Two other former NB Atlantic names, Cock o' the North and Thane of Fife, were re-used on P2s. The "Duke of Rothesay" name may well have been in the frame if the LNER had built further P2s and is arguably appropriate for No 2007. The down-side of course would be that of far less public recognition than "Prince of Wales".

"Duke of Rothesay" name was re-used on a Thompson A2/1.

£6.2 billion for the pair, which isn't terrible. A better naval comparison for construction cost overruns would be the early days of the Astute-class SSN programme. As mentioned up-thread, the issues affecting Prince of Wales aren't fatal to the ship itself, but better to fix a problem straight away rather than sail across the Atlantic on just the one shaft.

Recommended further reading for those interested; https://www.navylookout.com/hms-pri...queen-elizabeth-takes-on-some-of-her-tasking/

You are probably thinking of Bismarck, which took an aerial torpedo from Ark Royal, which jammed the rudder and flooded the associated compartments. Combined with flaws inherent to the ships stern, this left Bismarck unable to properly maneuver and easy prey for the pursuing Home Fleet.
I would emphasise that this was wartime though. Bismarck was sent out before fully worked up, and likewise was the previous Prince of Wales to counter her, ships would have to sail as needs must in wartime.

The rule of three or four is probably best to be mentioned here, in that while 1 ship is in active service (100% fit), there is 1 to 2 that can be sailed in port undergoing training or light maintenance, and another that is in deep refit. Thankfully having 2 aircraft carriers allowed QE to take over PoW's duties.

    ~
We may now resume our regularly scheduled P2 discussion.
(Sure PoW is not the most inspiring name, and Duke of Rothesay is more in keeping for a P2, but I shan't complain, it's not my loco and I haven't donated towards it. It's simply not a big deal to badger A1SLT about).

For goodness' sake! We're in the 21st century and about to get a new express steam loco built to modern standards based on an iconic Gresley design. It will run on the main line, too! What on earth does it matter what name it carries?

Exactly.I'm not a fan of the royals, nor especially inclined to the military but the fact that a bunch of guys working in little more than a shed can produce 70 tons of working historic machine never ceases to amaze me. They can call it whatever they want as far as I'm concerned.
