It seems the howler has been corrected. The caption now reads "Sir Winston Churchill's coffin being put on a train at Waterloo - the Battle-of-Britain-Class locomotive was named after him."

I remember watching the train and funeral on TV... I had even put my Triang (Pre Hornby) OO model alongside the TV.

Somewhere online there's a great account of the funeral journey by the fireman. I don't remember where. Can anyone point to it?

Perhaps the Ajax firedoors sliced him up as he went in...

The caption to the first photo includes "Eddystone going like the clappers". On a preserved line?

Odd thing to take away from that update, which has got lots of great news. And it really does look like Eddystone is 'going like the clappers', even if the reality is a somewhat more ambling 0-25mph…

I well remember a certain Northern Railway's Enthusiasts' Weekends in the 1980s when "Express" services were run, without stops at intermediate stations. Standing on _____rth Station watching 34092 come through was thrilling - And if it was doing 25mph then I'm the Pope!

If you look back through the SLL News you'll find other photos from Robin Procter who is adept at panned shots giving the illusion of speed. Note the word 'illusion'.

As the person driving 'little 28' in that photo and knowing the data that can be provided by the Real Time Trains equipment on SR's trains, I can assure you it was doing no more than 25mph.

It's no more interesting than a skilful bit of photography.

If you look at the 5th photo down, same point. The camera may not lie, but it can tell tall tales...

I've got some lovely ones of my son aged c4 looking like he is going at prodigious speed on his balance bike, thanks to a happy coincidence of light and phone camera allowing panning shots
