Have to admit, it does go rather well with stock in practically any livery. Noticed that quality back when the Q1 was working on the Bluebell.

Regarding the whistle test and using a whistle from Sparrow Hawk, I always understood that the whistle carried by T.R. No.3 came from that loco. Always possible there was more than one, though.

Very likely I would say, knowing the LNER, where the standard whistles are concerned, but the chime whistles were pretty specific to the A4s. Even the P2 hooters aren't the same tone. There may well have been a couple spare. I think it's always best to describe the whistle as "was carried by" rather than "belonging to" to be honest.

As an aside the little Y8 0-4-0T York shed pilot was fitted with the whistle from the destroyed Sir Ralph Wedgwood from 1942 to 1946.

Was anyone on the train to York behind 4468 last Thursday? Outward run seen at the Potters Bar pick-up with the blower hard on and much black smoke when it was shut off. How did it perform?

From what i have seen from the various videos posted, yes the 47 was under power, but was that for the Mk3's in the consist, never really saw her lifting her stack, giving a shove.

I don't think anyone was on a run behind 4468 last Thursday as it hasn't operated for some 35 years now. I'm sure that many off 4498's train would have gone to visit the static A4 in the NRM though.

I enjoyed my trip to York with 4498 on Thursday and despite the rubbish weather, I thought SNG performed well making up time lost to other service trains late running. From coach G on the return journey, SNG sounded superb working hard near Gainsborough. Outward journey was harder to hear from back end of the train and windows tightly shut in the driving rain. Can't say I witnessed any black smoke though, only the white stuff drifting across the fields in our wake. 1942 or 2022?

I'd echo these comments. I was in Coach H, so one of the Mk2's so sadly we didn't hear a peep out of the loco on the way up and could only hear the whistle occasionally in the return, but for a loco still relatively fresh out the box, seemed to have performed well. The run up was mostly in the 60's with occasional brief running in the 70's. Again smoke drift seemed white whenever it drifted past. The run back had faster running and did well to make up the lost time for the chaos at York prior to the return.

I ordered a copy of "The Overhaul Picture" by Trevor Camp from www.4498.org.uk/overhaulbook and for those who like these sort of things, this one comes highly recommended. Quality images of 60007 being dismantled, restored and reassembled.

I definitely agree. I bought a copy from the sales team onboard the York trip and it's certainly a comprehensive book with plenty of images and information.

It looked very well going past my window this morning. Was wartime black really that glossy ex-works?

I've heard the actual wartime product described as "tar euphemistically called paint". Never having encountered the genuine article, it's not a reference I'm in any position to evaluate.

I don't know, but surely you would have wanted it as non-reflective as possible.

That was something a couple of members of the Trust mentioned to me at a model railway meeting last month.

I haven't considered 4498 to have any Gloss paint on view atm - just some 'egg shell' Black that might look shiny when wet?
