I could go for that. It certainly looked very well indeed on 60163.

7812 was tested in steam today at Tyseley near the conclusion of an overhaul started in January 2018 and considerably disrupted by covid. The usual short snagging list will now be worked through before returning home to the SVR and active service.

What’s better than a 78xx? Has to be a pair of them! :)

Indeed 7802 is now in the workshop, being actively worked on and prepared for fitting the new cylinders which are on site. Most likely a season 2024 onwards loco.

Or three! I thought it strange that the Charitable Trust used a half a million quid bequest to fund the PLC's 4930, rather than support its own appeal for its own 7819.

In other news, contract overhaul Dunrobin has now re-entered the works http://beamishtransportonline.co.uk/2022/11/ti-news-28-2022/

It’s ok Patrick there are a few decisions that are coming across as strange lately.
Great to hear about Dunrobin though, any chance of a pairing with with 6233 at a gala maybe? :)

I didn't find it so strange. Looked at dispassionately, in the last 40 or so years there has been at least one working Manor at the railway in more years than not, and courtesy of the EMF there should be two back in ticket within a couple of years. Although 7819 has not steamed since 1994, it had two boiler tickets covering almost 14 years.

4930 had only one ticket which lasted about 7 years and ended in 1986. As I see it, the Charitable Trust sees its purpose as supporting the Railway as a whole, rather than its own ends. From the Railway's point of view, which would have been the bigger draw returning to steam?

I hope that how the Trust sees its purpose is consistent with its objectives as approved by the Charity Commission.

I've no doubt it is, they're fairly widely drawn ["..to advance education for the benefit of the public by the acquisition, restoration, preservation and operation of heritage railway locomotives.."]

How do you know that the £500k bequest was not ringfenced by the individual for the overhaul of 4930?

It was in the CT annual report, the bequest was restricted for ‘GW locomotives’ (from memory)

Edit/update: the 2018/19 accounts stated the Charitable Trust received a single legacy for GWR projects totalling £503,173. It was applied in the accounts as restricted funds as GWR Restoration fund. The 2019/20 accounts noted with thanks the late David Clifford’s legacy for a GWR project, and its application by the CT to 4930.

The significant fund raising contribution and lobbying by "Friends of Hagley Hall" no doubt gave momentum to the restoration of 4930. It will come as no surprise that working locos have active supporters pushing forward their cause by raising funds, publicising their activities and attracting new support. Such active support has yet to emerge for 7819 & the CT cannot justify forking out for the restoration without it.

7714's paint refresh is now complete and is now with BR early crest and red backed numberplates.

Final run of their current boiler tickets for 2857 and 1501 tomorrow. 1501 on the Bridgnorth set, 2857 first off KR with a 10 coach train (including diner). 40106 on the diesel turn.

2 absolutely cracking machines, that I’ve spent many a happy hour behind.
A pair of Manors is not a bad replacement though :)

Agree Matt! I love the "Manor`s", but will miss 1501 and 2857.

Im more looking forward to 29 coming back into traffic. 7802 I think is being targeted for a 2024 return. Money depending.

Lovely to see the valley so busy today for the last hurrahs of 2857 & 1501. The 10 coach set behind the 28 looks immaculate and was full and standing on the first departure from Kiddy.
