The railtour we plan to go offer tickets for the event - you need to let them know you want tickets for the event when you book the tickets for the railtour. This is because the trip carries on to Poole so not all the passengers would be planning to visit this event.

Does anyone have an old locoshed book -- that gave directions to the loco shed -- 71A -- and you have to go past the works entrance to get to the shed -- basically as you have quoted above -- except walking time is probably 15mins to the shed - for us old guys !

a while ago i think it was mentioned that if bookings kept up, another steam engine would be hired in, as saturday is now pretty much sold out, (but not b4 i got my ticket!) any news on an extra engine?

also, what engines will be in steam? its all very well ordering steam engines in, but it will be a bit boring if none of them are steamed, obviously some cannot be steamed because of boiler certificates.

M7 & Beattie should be doing brake van rides.

Manston will be in steam, but not moving.

It's good to know they have finally had permission to do brake van rides. Hopefully, I'll be able to do so if the queues aren't too bad.

I've just noticed that 30777 is no longer listed on the website, so can we assume for certain that it won't be in attendance? If it isn't, then it'll be a shame, as I've yet to see it.

Regretfully, 30777 has been withdrawn. The custodians in charge of the NRM-owned loco have had changes to their plans which mean the it wont be in the area as it has no main line work for several months. Another 'big loco' is under active consideration but it's a balance over the cost of hire and movement to Eastleigh, which is not cheap, to the potential number of people through the gate it's not an easy call.

Put another way, the sales of advance tickets provide the financial security of the event, but if the weather is bad, the 'bonus' of the money on the gate just wont happen.

The movement costs of a steam loco to Eastleigh is not cheap, even by rail. If you use a low loader, because the latter cannot access the works due to the narrow bridge with a weight restriction, the locos arriving by road have to be trip worked from Eastleigh North Yard, over Network Rail, and need a fitness to run exam and an ultrasonic axle certificate. These have to be paid for and there is no way around it - even for a move of around 800 yards.

The cost of another Bulleid Pacific by road was costed out but you are looking at £8-10,000 for a return move. That's money that wont go to the charity and would need 800 to 1,000 visitors just to cover it. The organisers are conscious that this is an event to raise money for charity, so there is no open chequebook and money is spent prudently.

Now, if there is a generous sponsor out there with several thousand spare for a loco move, I'd be happy to talk to them.

Is there scope for another railtour ? i'm sure it would be well supported ?.. there's not much from up north heading down currently, maybe one saturday, one monday, steam 1 way each way and diesel return & back again ?

I know a few from up north complaining how hard it will be to get there because of the cross london trekking adding considerable time.

pity about 30777, it was one of the locos i most want to see, but i suppose it is a sign of the times.

network rail are a pain though. steam locos operated with safety standards much lower in the '50s and people didnt get hurt all the time, so why should anything have changed?

I take it that 35028 will only be there on the saturday. what is 70013 doing between its tours on 23rd and 30th? is it staying at eastleigh?

hopefully uksteam will post the timings of the swanage locos arriving by rail.

I sympathise but the problem is that we are well inside the deadline time to plan, path and advertise a tour. All tour operators were contacted last autumn so they have had their chance to promote a tour. One of the difficulties is that some tour companies will only work with certain licensed operator, so if they do not have the capacity, then that's unfortunate.

I fully endorse your view on people living in the Yorkshire, Humberside and North East areas and the lack of a tour to the event. As joint organiser, I am disappointed that there are not a couple more tours, but this may also be due stock and crews already being booked.

Cross London is not ideal either, but may be better that other routes. At the risk of being hung by my tender bits, some societies have decided it's easier to come by road coach, and are taking advantage of group rates for 12 or more. And you could use three cars...

If anyone would like a group rate booking form please email admin @ eastleigh100.com

It would be inappropriate to comment on safety standards, other than to say there is now an offence of corporate manslaughter that anyone organising an event could get embroiled in. Safety standards cannot be compromised. Period.

As for 70013, it will remain at Eastleigh until its tour from Poole to Bristol on May 30.

In respect of 35028, it works the train for UK Railtours out and back from Victoria on May 23 with visitors to the event, then returns with its support coach Saturday evening to be on display throughout Sunday and Monday, finally returning to Stewart's Lane teatime Monday.

If this changes, I will post it here.

My tickets for the Sunday and Monday arrived today, looking forward to it immensely, should be one of the highlights of the year for true afficionados of southern steam (people like southyorkshireman, for example...)

I concur. Steam, Steel and Stars II, and this. I couldn't ask for more! Thank you for clarifying the issue regarding 30777. It is a shame, as this locomotive has succeeded in eluding me in almost the same way 34067 did until I took the plunge and did the 'Golden Arrow' in January. I may try and pin it down on the GCR in the near future. But to be able to tick off 30587, 34070 and 35028 and get a decent photo of 35005 (possibly 34028 too, as my WSR photos were a bit dark due to the brightness of the sunlight on 21 March) is a chance not to be missed. Is it known if Clan Line is going into the works site to turn around and line up with the other locomotives on the Saturday, prior to returning the tour to London?

So if its not going into the works, where will it turn round/be serviced? There's about a mile of track that orbits the works site which has been used by 35028 before after using the Southampton Docks branch (as you'd know, being presumably a member of the MNLPS and/or the support crew). I can't think of any triangles in the area, so this is turning out to be an interesting operational question... but as its going to Salisbury, I presume its using the east chord of the triangle there to go, via Romsey and Southampton, to Eastleigh, but that still means that 35028 is facing the wrong way for Fareham, Havant and Guildford.

I'd be surprised if the train goes into Salisbury. Most likely will take the avoiding line at Salisbury and then at Romsey turn left and head into Eastleigh from the north, meaning the loco will already be facing in the correct direction for when it departs for Havant.

That is the sensible option, and I've just had a look at UK Steam, which seems to concur with it. All I need to know now is when 35028 arrives/departs on the Saturday, so that I can catch a glimpse of it before it steams off into the darkness (the sunset will be in the opposite direction!). That's the problem when your only attending the one day for various reasons...

Know what you mean. I will miss seeing Clan Line on the Saturday as busy at uni that weekend so can only get down on the Monday.
