Nothing but pure perfection from the Black 5 today, seen at Andover, erupting up Templecombe bank, before returning through the latter at speed. Some cheery tunes from the brass band as well!

Pleased to see from you clip that it looks like the RTC £50 standard class offer last Friday seemed to have worked and it looked full at the back.

A fine video - good storyline and camera work. That return looked to be well over 60mph through Templecombe but who knows...

A bit late, but I've now got my footage of Tuesday's RTC charter train to Sherborne edited and on my YouTube channel. I hope it's worth the wait!

Correct, we only took around 1,000 gallons on top of what was left in the tender which was more than enough to get us to Salisbury. If we would have been given more time than just the 9 minutes, we would have filled up but with just over an hour at Salisbury & a second tanker, we had plenty of time to get full there.

I believe some Black 5s including this one are now allowed 65 mph

So in your eyes then, how “well over 60mph” were we going then?

Considering that weren't the limits established based on broad brush consideration of wheel size, how has deciding what can now to 65 been established?

Good to see the Christmas Carol train back at Sherborne.
Just one shot for me this time. Arriving and departing Sherborne with 47813 giving big shove for the climbs to come.

6233 left Woking very gingerly today and was being mightily pushed by the class 47. With this and other recent apparent gentle efforts by 6233 is the loco either 'unwell' or are crews being asked to use kid gloves, I wonder?

Exhaust hanging forever in the still, frosty air this morning as Scots Guardsman heads north in the early sunlight through Northumberland.

For anyone out to see the return of 6233:

Apart from the fact it arrived at Bristol dept nearly an hour late, there's disruption around Bathampton Jn. All trains are being severely delayed or cancelled, wouldn't be surprised if this effects 6233's return journey.

Yes, yet another steam run subject to severe delays! It lost time steadily en route and got to Bristol around 45 down. I do feel 6233 is being nursed as the 47 was at full throttle leaving Woking, in stark contrast to 45231's very late departure from Basingstoke yesterday where no help was given at all.

I have not been behind the Duchess since just before Covid (Feb 20) , but I always thought gentle was the way the loco was worked compared to say No 9. (That trip having the Duchess up to York and No 9 back)
I always thought maybe that was how the owners liked it but I have no idea if that is actually the case.

Yes, and of course the owner's wishes must be respected. The loco does stand alone in stark contrast to other main line steam I have witnessed in its 'kid gloves' approach. Others may have experienced different, of course. The comparative effort expended by 6233 and the class 47 leaving Woking today will be apparent from my video when it is uploaded.

My experience of 6233 during her first stint on the Main Line from 2001 was that she wasn't thrashed but she did work a lot harder than she seems to on this current ML ticket.
I did a few trips with her including over the Devon banks and she certainly wasn't' shoved by a diesel (we didn't have one on the back). It does appear that in recent years she has been nursed along.
