Back in the good old days on the Bluebell, when we still ran trains, we used to have a duty in which a small engine (a P or a Terrier, for example) would draw one Santa set out of the carriage shed into the pump house siding and steam heat; and then using an extension hose from the other end of the engine, heat the adjacent Santa set in the Newick siding. Once both sets had departed, you'd then bumble round the station keeping early arriving punters for the later trains happy while the carriages were up the line somewhere. The advantage was a later book on for two crews, at the expense of the shunt engine crew.

It was surprising how much firing you needed to do to heat 12 carriages from a small engine.

Using a long hose to heat two sets of stock simultaneously has been practised by the NYMR as long as I can remember and I'm sure it was done in BR days and is practised elsewhere on heritage railways.

I spent a very pleasant day doing just this on Lucie yesterday, Heating 7 Coaches on a small vertical boiler was a new experience and made for an enjoyable day.
Between running up and down Pickering Platform 2 giving people rides and hiding in the down sidings out of te way of trains, it was a good refresher on a
ground frame I've rarely used. We we're heating the set for a good hour before the train engine arrived to take it to Levisham.

I've lost the original post but it seems that Repton was employed in assisting to defrost signal and point rodding at some point in the last few days! Very useful indeed are these steam engines.

That was my post in the Swanage thread in reply to @Andy Moody's post about how cold it was on the Isle of Purbeck one evening. We did have to defrost Repton first, including thawing out the injectors and cylinders/drain cocks. With apologies to those who have seen this picture elsewhere, but here is the shot of the use of a steam lance to free up points and point rodding last Friday. IMG_6287 copy.jpg

On Friday morning the car thermometer registered -8 degrees as I was driving through Pickering. I was back there again today (Monday) and it was an almost tropical 13 degrees.

Any indications as yet when the Steam Gala will be - I've booked my accommodation assuming it would the weekend of the 23rd and 24th Sept but I just want to pin it down for sure and the website doesn't have any dates.

Not much confirmation of anything this year at the Moors! Very odd.

Dinning trains are on sale and leave the weekend of 23rd/24th Sept free (as they did initially last year only adding the gala pullmans later in the season), so hopefully it's that weekend.

More than likely, it's been that weekend for a good number of years. Unsure what is holding up the release of any sort of timetable or events lists, especially given its the 50th anniversary this year.

    If it does
If it does, I hope it will have a theme that precludes the unsavoury idiots who like dressing up in Waffen SS uniforms. After all, the event is said to have become too big, to the point where the cost of organising it has outstripped the income it brings in - banishing these people should help get the numbers down, if only a little. More realistically, one could perhaps see a 1940s theme, but the emphasis away from war.

I figured it would be that weekend because it has always been (from memory, here, so I'm happy to be corrected) the last full weekend in September (so not including Sat 30th Sept, Sun 1st Oct). So I booked my accommodation last September on that basis. The later the dates get confirmed then the harder it will be to make any changes.

Personally, I'd suggest that it wouldn't be appropriate while the conflict in Ukraine remains ongoing.

Given the reactions of certain corners to the cancellations of last year, I'd just memory hole it if I was the NYMR.
