And at the moment Steve even further away from the beach than normal as the temporary X50 only goes as far as Studland Village not all the way down to the Swanage side of the ferry at Shell Beach.

BR black? Philistine! Yes it will stand out in LSWR livery, but so it should. That will be part of the appeal to show it’s something special. Particularly as the intention is for it to earn some money being hired to other railways for special events.

How many engines are there in LSWR Livery? you could count them on the fingers of one hand, Only 563, and 245, soon to be joined by 499, As 245, is hardly ever going to be returned to steam, that just leaves 563, and 499, that are working, If 488, was to be repainted in Adams pea green livery, even static, one day, that would make quite an line up, I would hope that one day, when the Titanic coaches are ready, that there could be a display held, of an LSWR rake of coaches, and several engines, perhaps somewhere in the south, where all surviving LSWR engines can be gotten together.

With 53 due to return soon, it would be good to see that in LSWR green to complement 563. I’m sure we’ll see it in the same old BR black though.

Might part of the issue be that DCC feel they already have subsidised this service, so far to the tune of around £5m and with not much to show for the money?

With government cutbacks to local councils etc I suspect if they did then they would have to cover it with a rise in council taxes and I guess that wouldn't go down well !

245 is in LSWR livery (Drummond if memory serves) but last time I was there it still carried anachronistic SR / BR lamp irons and LBSC / SR discs. I think the NRM could, and should, try harder.

It’s common knowledge that 499 is being restored to LSWR livery, and that the overhaul is now much nearer the end than the beginning.

563 and 30053 will beat 499 into service but I hope that the MHR/SR can come to an agreement to reunite all three.

And maybe. the SR, MHR, and Bluebell can come to a deal, with shared transportation costs, So all three engines can appear at an LSWR, gala at all three lines, Starting at the Swanage Railway, then MHR, and finally Bluebell, maybe West coast can donate the haulage costs, of hauling them , in light steam, from Swanage, then Alton, and East grinstead.

I think you are a bit harsh on the NRM about the external restoration of 245 as it has had a far more recent paint job than most of the locos on display there. Here it is the last time it saw the light of day, during the shunt in 2011 when the current Station Hall display was set up. The SR lamp irons are present on the bunker but the smokebox shows the LSWR configeration. IMG_3675 copy.jpg IMG_3669 copy.jpg IMG_3692 copy.jpg
While externally complete, it was a pity to see the internal motion, which had been lying on a couple of pallets in the workshop, being sent of to store at Wroughton during the clearout last year.

The LSWR Tri- Compo Brake attached to the M7 is the one initially restored in 1947 and displayed with 563 at Waterloo that year.

I think 563 will look absolutely stunning when restored and carrying this livery

    Peter
