Comparing the planned operational 2024 fleet to my first visit in 2006:

    2024 - 34027, 75069, 4930, 7812, 7714, 43106 until Summer, 13268 latter part of the year and 813 I assume for any diners and galas with 7802 , 4150, 82045 & Warwickshire in for overhauls/restoration.

2006 - 7802, 45110, 48773, 42968, 46443, 5164, 5764, 1501, 7714 I believe was undergoing repairs for a while, I think 813 & 'The Lady Armaghdale' were on hire. I may be wrong but 60009 was often at Bridgnorth so I assume was used on the odd occasion too? 4566 was in the advance stages of overhaul with 7812 & 43106 also in the works.

But of course at times the SVR required a larger quantity of engines back then with the classic bank holiday timetable featuring no less than 6 locomotives in operation (almost a gala!) plus the intense Santa Specials which are of course a memory.

You certainly get some damned good results! The reason I ask is that I currently use a Canon EOS 450-D, and whilst I love it and get some great photos, it does struggle with dark-coloured objects at speed in poor lighting conditions... ie. steam locos on the Settle-Carlisle or other lines on a grim day.

I'm at the point of being able to afford a Canon EOS 90-D, and am hoping that I will have some better results as the ISO goes up to 27000+, as opposed to 1600 on the 450-D. Not bothered about shooting video with it at all, but I would love some clear, crisp images. I will post some once I've got one!

    Richard. :)

Presumably that's apart from 34027 which AIUI is being withdrawn in the autumn for a quick overhaul, hence the temporary repaint into wartime black.

On the 4150 front, the boiler was temporarily fitted into the frames last week so all the large copper pipes can be made up and the fittings test-fitted (it will have to come out again for hydraulic and steam testing in due course).

What is the condition of 5764? Is it tired mechanically?

I'm sure the Severn Valley have seen many changes throughout the years and whatever the situation they always pull through, I was simply just saying that as of now they only have 7714.

Don’t disagree but prefer the railway to be able to operate profitably so we can all enjoy it ;)

Be careful with the blanket Cl5 and above comment. I would agree that even a Hall & Black 5 are one size too big really for most heritage lines in overall weight, axle load & wheel size. However a 28xx & LM 8F (apart from those hard to see behind LM tenders) are very much at home on a 25mph railway. Its no coincidence that 3850 & 2857 were considered to be among the most economical locos in the fleets of their respective lines.

Ignoring that 3850 was moved on due to not being wanted because of its tendency to rock the carriages with it’s good engine ride, I’m not surprised, have heard similar reports about the tank version.

Out of interest how does 48773 compare?

2022 finished with six locos in traffic. A summary of what's suggested above:

2023 - six or so at any one time: 34027, 75069, 4930, 7812, 7714, 43106 (early), 13268 (later), plus possibly 813 and 4150 later in the year if they're ready. Overhauls/restoration/repair at Bridgnorth during the year will be 13258, Dunrobin, 813, 4150, 82045, 34027 (goes in at end of year)

    2024 - eight or so: 75069, 4930, 7812, 7714, 13268, 813, 7802, 4150. Overhauls/restoration/repair at Bridgnorth are Dunrobin (?), 82045 and 34027. Nothing more into works until they're cleared, so at the earliest in late 2024

    2025 and 2026 - ten or so: 75069, 4930, 7812, 7714, 13268, 813, 7802, 4150, 34027 and 82045. Next engines then out of traffic (unless extended) are 813 and 7714, both of which were into traffic in late 2016.

Not included: Welsh Guardsman or 1450 or planned repairs. Warwickshire at Bewdley.

It was amazingly popular on the SVR. I remember its last day in service; there was a queue of drivers on the platform all wanting one last go on the regulator.

2857 has never to my knowledge produced any tendency to 'rock the carriages', and has seen consistent use on dining trains over the years. The same goes for 48773.

AD600 'Gordon' was another matter altogether, and was effectively banned from use on SVR dining trains due to the fore and aft motion imparted through the drawbar.

Think the 4200s/5205s are deemed as a "tank version" of a 28xx/2884

I know it was widely regarded and remember the last day at Bridgnorth during the flood damage but meant was it as economical as 2857?

I remember sitting in 80969 out of Bridgnorth behind Gordon in the early 90’s at one of the galas. They gave us tea, coffee and biscuits. By the time we were over the bypass bridge, it was already shaking, by Oldbury viaduct it was spilling everywhere!!!

Well not directly, but I meant in the broader sense of GWR goods engine which they both are.

I’ve had Gordon on the Diner! Autumn Gala ‘98 I think it was, eyebrows were raised about its use though, for the above reason.
