Yes. Number 21 out of 20. In all honesty. There is no que anymore. A loco like Gordon that is going to need a minimim of 7 figues spent on it, is very unlikely to be overhauled unless a benefactor comes forward and offers to pay the majority or all of the overhail costs.

For seven figures you could probably build two new ones.. Is that figure an actual estimate of the work or a 'don't want to do it so we'll say an eye watering sum'?

7 figures could be as low as £1million - you'd do well to build two new ones for that. (Alternatively, it could be as high as £9.999m, for which you probably could build two new ones ...)

In all seriousness what’s to be lost with little chat with those at the KWVR with they’ve done to their WD to improve its riding? If there’s mods to be done why can’t they happen to the Army’s last 2-10-0?

That figure is based on 75069 and 4930. Gordon stood outside after its failure in 96, complete with cladding until 2006. The same happened to 75069 and 4930. One of which tipped the scales into the low 1 million and 1 that peaked just below that million.
We aren't talking sums akin to the flying money pit. However we are talking close to, probably over the £1million mark.

I’d like to see it back in steam too, I have fond memories of Gordon. When my mum died video emerged of me on the footplate at Bridgnorth which my Grandfather had taken which I had forgotten existed. Basically my dad decided to move and found a box of old video tapes of which one turned out to be this. Once I saw it it all came flooding back, it’s amazing what you forget sometimes!!!

Yes the failure was in 1999 but I remember it being at Highley & Arley for several years before it’s cosmetic overhaul for the engine house.

The NYMR are also investing a lot of money into 3672, so they see some benefit that the SVR doesn't see.

Was it 99? I thought it was slightly earlier. Regardless, 7 years or 10 years sat outside, exposed to all weathers. I do remember it being sat behind the box at Highley with 7819. All the cladding and lagging was still present which will have soaked up any moisture and knowing how cheaply the loco was produced, Id imagine there will be some very thin boiler plate.

I can see the Moors trying to get 3672 ready for when 92134 comes out of service. Same length of trains but a vastly different railway.

3672 has an active supporters group and fundraising drive. 600 has neither. Money talks.

Yes definitely 1999. Agree it’s easy to forget how much it actually deteriorated with the years of outside storage, especially with the first class job that was done on the cosmetic restoration.

Indeed not. Company owned of course along with 4930 which just had loads spent on it (and was part of the share appeal and 45110 which I think we will see before 600. All have spent years out of service at various times. Even some of those with fundraising activities are the same mind such as 7819 & 47383.

So those who want to see "Gordon" overhauled, ask yourselves this - which loco's planned overhaul do you want to see cancelled to facilitate this? Much as we would like to see all surviving locos up and running it is never going to happen for very many of them. You have to prioritise which ones get the overhaul treatment in the full knowledge that if it is to be Loco A then it means that Locos B,C,D etc will quite possibly not run again. There is neither the cash nor the facilities to restore them all. To my mind Gordon is best left where it is, properly conserved and on display.

It will be interesting to see what is selected next for overhaul given that the mogul and 4150 will be completed in the next year or so. Of course the recent reduction in steam mileage will reduce the opportunity to fund future overhauls.

No one said otherwise!!! I’d like to see it in steam again one day in my lifetime but as you say there are other priorities.

The only argument for overhauling it is that the railway could have a Thomas type event featuring Gordon and stick two fingers up to the copyright owner, not enough to justify the cost. The are a lot of engines in the same category that will never steam again unless someone with a big cheque book comes along. The same applies to some of the more potty new build projects
