Rescheduled to the summer where we'll be possibly knee deep in a steam ban. This will be swiftly rearranged for the end of October where the added inclusion of our heritage diesel will assist us over the banks due to leaf fall season. Hope I'm wrong.

It's obviously for valid reasons, but has 60613 ever made it out of overhaul/repair on schedule? It always seems to be something with this one.

I think you will find the track record on most locos is not good on that score.

Snagging problems that’s all, let’s not forget this is a group that’s also building another locomotive which fingers crossed should be about in a year or so.
Compare that with another group that have promised the same thing since 1995…
Seriously what would you like? Something done properly and throughly?
Or do we want to go down the 6201 route?

The scale and complexity of the ETCS fitment is mind-boggling and has added significantly to the challenges facing the Trust during this overhaul.

Indeed, going forward it may be really useful, but so far it has only caused confusion and delay.

Aren't they in a minority among owning groups in actually announcing a schedule? The group I support are currently I think on year 12 of their 9 year restoration plan and generally considered to be making reasonable progress.

Due diligence springs to mind. If the complexities weren’t understood prior to commencing the overhaul then I’d posit that it was somewhat rash to announce a six month return to the main line and sell tickets for tours on that basis.

I suppose I have some sympathy, anyone involved in railway preservation at the sharp end has to be an optimist. The correct announcement should read; loco now withdrawn for overhaul and it will be back when it’s finished!

True! I suppose I'm just biased by the others having fewer newsletters about it. I trust that the Trust (heh) know what they're doing, but it's still a little bit frustrating for months of hype to build to another delay- feels a bit like getting one of those "something for you" cards through the door after tracking a parcel :Joyful:

Most overhaul teams seem to prefer to say "It will be ready when it's ready"; but the A1 Trust has a very different business model from most of them. It would certainly make no sense to wait until the loco is almost ready before starting to plan trips, but perhaps they should have been planned but not yet advertised.

Called in at Darlington to see the boiler, fair to say plenty of welding equipment in firebox, and rust staining on front tubeplate. IMG_3001.jpg IMG_3003.jpg

I don’t fully understand whether the need to retube it is due to faulty work at Meiningen. Presumably it had new tubes fitted there as part of the overhaul.

If you are following the trail of work that is becoming necessary on many of our main line fleet there may be a pattern here with apparently unexpected things being necessary on the boilers.

Wouldn't wish to extrapolate into any conjecture on that but laying any 'blame' at engineers doing the work might be misplaced. I guess if we want to have a discussion about that then you have to start by looking at the common factors at play on the main line fleet. Thinking here of things like for example, variable coal quality that introduces differential burning and 'hot spots' plus the challenge of ensuring that the water is of the appropriate quality and behaves as it should.

Unexpected things shouldn’t happen on boiler that’s just been retubed!
