    Well we don't know yet.
    It could be S&D.
    It could be LSWR.
Although I really have no idea where Buzby2 got it from, it's nowhere on the main site or FB page.

Buzby2 did not state it was to be S&D.
He said "As it's 160 years-ish since the missing link, from Blandford to Templecombe, was opened on 31st August 1863 I wonder if an "S&DJtR" theme might be 'suitable' for this gala".

I got it from my imagination. That's why I wrote "I wonder if ..... " so that's why you couldn't find it on the main site or FB page.
    Other anniversaries during 2023 include:
185 years since LSWR operated their first train (Nine Elms to Woking Common) on Monday 21st May 1838.
175 years since London Waterloo station first opened on Tuesday 11th July 1848.
135 years since LSWR opened the direct line to Bournemouth via New Milton (Tuesday 6th March 1888)
100 years since the Grouping (Monday 1st January 1923).
75 years since Nationalisation (Thursday 1st January 1948).
    35 years since Bournemouth-Weymouth Electrification (Monday 16th May 1988).
35 years since first passenger trains to/from Harmans Cross (Saturday 3rd December 1988).
There might be others, of course, so take your pick!

Flying Scotsman as well I guess. Good to see Autumn Tints back; I wonder if that is back to old school Fenchurch + Obo.

With Wightwick Hall still on the railway, perhaps another GWR loco (or another loco which the railway would like to visit) is available before the summer holidays?
With Archie and possibly Beachy Head entering service in the later half of the year, perhaps it is risky having an Autumn Event when you do not know if you require a visiting loco (s).

    Be nice. :)
I thought GoS was going to be GW last year, but, you know, it's what the railway wants. :)

Maybe a lesson learned after planning a gala for a certain Terrier's big birthday in 2022 when not only did it not make it back in traffic in time but one of the visitors then also failed almost immediately?

I imagine removing the cost of running a fourth day will have something to do with it! One day less of coal usage for potentially 7 or 8 locos would be quite the saving!

    Hi

    May I politely ask:

In previous years, when a thread of that year's events and dates has been started, it was undertaken by the OP to try to keep the first post updated with contributed listings, links, etc. (in date order).

I appreciate that act was entirely the choice of the OP concerned, but personally I found it pretty useful. (And would like to record my thanks here, in case those involved are reading...)

Just wondered if there was/is any intention that this thread will be handled likewise?

    Cheers,
    Martin

From Facebook and posted by Robin Coombes and KESR GM

"Decisions, decisions, decisions. I have shortly to make a decision on a locomotive to visit the railway – a Bulleid Pacific 257 Squadron. Facebook, even Railway magazines, have already decided in advance that it is coming and our visiting locomotive group has kindly offered generous support to bring it to the railway. Emotionally who would not want a new locomotive to come to the railway and there is much passionate advice being given to me, both for and against. To those at the lineside or sitting at home, guest locos magically appear at the railway, unaware of what detailed assessments must be made behind the scenes and not just a nod and a handshake after the idea is put forward. However, in the real world, I cannot make a decision until due diligence has been completed. This will include assessments for: suitability of operations, available and competent crews, safe running, station working, passing movements, fitting into the timetable plus engineering criteria such as ability to maintain, contingency plans in the event of repairs or failures, having all the necessary paperwork in place and capability to meet our standards and practices. Then there is the need to establish commercial viability - as it will involve additional costs of coal, water treatment, other consumables, transport and hire charges - set against potential revenue generation. For instance: does it have a “Flying Scotsman” effect? Maybe yes, but maybe not, as already the loco can be seen locally and is not unique. If ‘yes’, are there guarantees or just more risk and guessing? Does a large passenger locomotive, designed mostly for express passenger working, fit with our charitable, educational and heritage objectives of being a “Light Railway” operated with small engines? Are there other better value, or appropriate, alternatives with lower risks? Recent experience has been very mixed on such benefits and costs. All I can assure everyone is that the decision will be made dispassionately, based on a detailed assessment of risk against reward."

Food for thought and maybe a reality check for those with shopping list expectations of visiting engines at a gala
