I saw Archie in the paintshop the other day, looking very shiny indeed. Can't be much longer before lining starts.

Looks quite a snug fit in there... Good job he's not any bigger!

Archie's now very shiny, including the buffer beams, and has lining all over too.

AIUI, he's due to leave the paintshop on Monday.

I'm afraid not. First I forgot my camera, and secondly it fills the paintshop so it's hard to get a shot anyway.

Only another few days till he'll be back out in the sunshine.

Err, aren't the totems facing the wrong direction? They should both be facing left, not right.

    Not necessarily ...

"The only other change of note to affect the Livery was the adoption of a new logo for tenders and side tanks, in 1956, and applied to the A4 Class from April 1957 onwards. This was based on the British Transport Commission’s Heraldic Crest, and can only be described as Crown, with a Lion standing erect inside the Crown, facing Left, and holding a wheel between its front paws, the whole being enclosed in a roundel, BRITISH RAILWAYS being displayed either side of the roundel in rectangular panels. This was duly applied and as previously left and right hand versions of the crest were employed, basically so that the lion always faced forward. However this was a major blunder, as Heraldic convention decrees that as the lion faces left on the official British Transport Commission Crest, it must always face that way on any emblem or logo derived from that Crest."
    from http://www.gresley.org.uk/a4name8.htm

But looking at the photos again, the lion on Sinclair appears to be facing backwards ...

And not to the left per Heraldic mumbo-jumbo... Guess they just used two the same.

Still looks a very good paint job though.

That's a bit misleading; when the unicycling lion was first introduced there was only one version of the transfer, so if the lion was on the wrong side of the engine he'd find himself with a rather draughty backside. This was later changed so that there were both left & right handed versions of the transfer.

I'm less certain about ferret & dartboard, but I believe this also suffered the indignity of having a one-handed transfer at some point, although I think this was much less common than had been the case with its predecessor. Hopefully an officer of the livery police will be able to set matters straight.

When I saw the incriminating photo in question, I assumed it was that way on purpose, of course it could just be that someone got it wrong. Has been known...

Funny how you have an elleventy squillion pound restoration, and the first thing someone picks up on is a sticker on the wrong way round.

The short answer is 'yes' they've got it wrong. Officially, these lions should always face left but initially, BR got it wrong and put right facing lions on the RHS of the loco until told to desist by the College of Arms. So the RHS could be prototypically correct but wrong, if you get my gist!
It's funny how it stands out a mile as being wrong on the LHS.. Well, it does to me! Who supplied the transfers?

Why have a Thomas face on the front. Thought the Bluebell abandoned it last year. Did SAS go to Kingscote or just Horsted.
