That’s only because they are not using passenger coaches, people would be on the train if they were.

I am aware Foxfield was issued with an improvement notice following an incident in 2010, but do not know of an enforced shut down

    Nit-picking?
Please explain how a PTS and a toolbox talk are the same thing...

Robin Coombes posted this earlier in the week which I have copied and shared here . Robin's words are very pertinent , not just on the SVR but across the movement . Railway management requires a unique set of skills that are hard to find but can be the difference between Thriving , Surviving of failing

"There has been much recent discussion on leadership. This week I had the privilege of listening to an after-dinner talk by one of the rail industries’ last true ‘railwaymen’ John Smith, head of GB Railfreight. Perhaps no surprise, it was insightful and candid on the challenges facing the rail industry and rail freight, witty, and inspiring as to what leadership is all about. Although we all get excited about the technology and the systems of railways, what really matters are the people. If you can look after the people they will look after you. The growth and development of GB Railfreight over the last 20 years is testament to John’s outstanding leadership. In my own career I have been fortunate to have been inspired by two great railwaymen, Chris Green and John Oxley. Many people think of leadership as telling other people what to do, what I see is that good leaders craft a vision that is realistic, have empathy, integrity, they are professional to the core, they are not frightened of being different or tackling the difficult, they are persistent, they listen first and speak last. Railways, whether large or small, modern or heritage, are amazingly complex and complicated entities, where a host of competing issues have to be balanced, such entities cannot be changed in the blink of an eye, good leadership is finding and understanding where the real challenges lie and then focus time and effort on tackling these. John was able to create a new culture at GB Railfreight which was then able to attract customers by building trust that they could and would deliver. "

You may be right. There was a period without trains running though I seem to recall whether ordered or just a sensible reaction to the improvement notice.

Can we move on from the photo charter discussion? The decision has been in place for a significant time now, nothing's changed and the "arguments" are getting petty if not repetitive. For those wishing to continue it, maybe something for private messaging? Continuing on here is going to change nothing, and has ruined what started out as an interesting discussion on SVR ideas moving forwards.

Robin has made some very open/honest posts this week, that are all equally thought provoking and resonating across the industry. Railway presrvation has reached a point it needs to re-invent itself for a more expectant generation in terms of interest and value. It's been achieved previous times, and some lines are further along than others on this occasion. 2023 will be a challenging year without a doubt, but that doesn't mean it can't be a success.

Tbh, we have a small (well, 8 now) child and our trips on the line over the last 5 years tend to be Bridgnorth to Highley and back after lunch at the engine house.

Again, the plural of anecdote is not data, but I'm not sure the average person on here is the average traffic.

Our 7yr old enjoys the Engine House as the play area is fairly large and "exciting" for them. We came post-Xmas, and if we hadn't brought the Nintendo she'd of been truly bored just riding back/forth as we were meeting various friends.

I don’t take my kids (6&10) to the SVR as it’s too long for them and there’s too much time sat in loops which results in them getting bored. I enjoy going on my own though! For them, 30 minute journey time is about the max they’ll endure before getting off the train so somewhere like Blaenavon, South Devon, Avon Valley or Dean Forest are ideal for them.

This reminds of the last time I visited the South Devon, there were a couple of young kids getting bored due to the length of journey!

Indeed, however, I did suggest pre-pandemic, that one way to get additional interest was, and keeping competency, was, during the summer season, on a four week rotation, running Auto, Small steam loco and short set, Small diesel loco and short set, goods train, on a diagram that ran Kidder - Highley, sit there for a while, then Highley - Bridgnorth - Kidder.

Exactly, and the great thing about a good risk assessment is that they account for that ;) The hazard is very high, but the probability is so low by account of the mitigating factors that it's negligible. Falling off a ladder, or slipping on a wet sleeper; a lesser hazard but far greater possibility. So they would score much worse.

You can do short trips though and take them around the attractive stations to watch the trains go by. Last time took them from Bewdley to Highley where they could watch the action from the gallery.
