Steam Locomotives that have never been on a low loader

Parts of 42073 have left site as part of overhaul/rebuild. I seem to recall being told the boiler went to Carnforth last overhaul.

No. Visited Llangollen in 2012 or thereabouts.

I think that when we start discussing loco components moving by road as opposed to the loco itself it is a sign that this thread has probably run its course. As it happens I think (but don't quote me on this) that it is 42085's boiler that has been overhauled at Carnforth and it to be returned to Haverthwaite shortly to be fitted to 42073 when its current boiler comes out of ticket.

I have a photo of myself in drivers seat of 70000 at the same event, just before my Dad and myself enjoyed a trip with it piloted by 44806 and in the company of a certain Mr Foster and his wife in a certain Thompson Buffet Car.
Most definitely not the worst Saturday afternoon I’ve ever had.

 

I don’t think it’s quite run it’s course just yet Peter, Just perusing through my Platform 5 and 46464 springs to mind. I’m also wondering about 44932 as a possible?
Cobbernob and 35029 I’m also wondering about? How did they get to York?

 

Copperknob went to the L&H Rly as part of the Furness Rly 150 events . . .

 

44932 was being overhauled at Butterley before moving to Carnforth.

35029 was moved by road from Barry to Sewstern for sectioning.

Copperknob has also been to Germany.

 

Coppernob went to Clapham on a low loader in the early '60s and has been on several road moves since then. Here it is in 2011 having just been moved all the way from Station Hall across Leeman Road to the Great Hall.

Yes. The ex -Butlins ones (46203, 46229, 46233) all went to/from their respective holiday camps by road. See post #99 for 6201's road move in the late '90s.

I thought 6203 went to Pwheli by rail? It certainly came out by rail. I’ve seen a photo of it being towed along the Cambrian.

 

Indeed Matt -so did 6229 to/from Minehead. But presumably they still had to get from the railhead to the camp somehow.

I don’t know about 6229, but I’m sure the track work in North Wales was altered for 6203 Peter as it was turned at BR’s insistence in ran smokebox first on its journey to Derbyshire.

I know tha the big locos went to Butlins by rail but how did they travel the last few yards to their resting places? As the only Butlins I've ever bee nt owas Filey and well before these locos were withdrawn, I've no idea how they were displayed.

It appears that 500yds of temporary track was laid to get 6203 both in and out of the camp at Pwllheli to the nearby Cambrian yard, so it would seem that 46203 is a contender after all.

The move of 46229 from the Minehead camp in 1975 is perhaps more interesting despite the fact that a low loader was used to convey it the short distance to the station. The Minehead branch had been closed to all traffic in 1970 but the track was still in situ so the loco was dragged down the branch by a class 25 diesel en route to Swindon for further restoration

Unclear precisely how it arrived. Departure was by rail, "that involved laying 500 yards of special track to connect up with the main line railway." If that was at the Pwlhelli end of the journey, does the fact they make special note imply that it's arrival was by road?

32640, Pwlhelli
"left Pwllheli (by road)"

6100, Skegness
"it arrived at Skegness (on the back of a Pickford's low loader)"

30102, Skegness
"It left the camp on 15th March 1971 for the road journey to Norfolk"

6229, Minehead
"it was subsequently sent down to Minehead via rail and arrived at the camp" (but unclear how it did the last few hundred yards - must have been by road, surely?) "It left the camp on 10th March 1975 and was towed by rail to the ex-GWR works at Swindon where it was repainted and cleaned before onward transfer to the National Railway Museum in York."

No details of the move, but has clearly frequently travelled by road

6233, Ayr
"it was towed via rail to the Ayr camp" (but again the same question about the final connection from the nearest railhead - I'm unfamiliar with the area). Outbound was by road: "being removed (this time by road as the railway line had since closed!) and taken on the long journey to Bressingham Steam Museum"

32662, Ayr
"Cosmetically restored it was sent by rail to Ayr" (pretty big journey!) Outbound: " It departed by road on 25th February 1971 to join the ever growing list of old Butlins loan engines at Bressingham in Norfolk". Has made road journeys since, e.g. to the Bluebell about 15 years ago.
