3738 is another Didcot engine which has never been on a low loader. You'll be able to add 7202 to the list whenever it steams. I don't know how 1363 moved from Bodmin to Didcot, I suspect by road. I'll see if I can find out.

Without going off too much on a tangent, besides 4150 and 7202, are there any other yet-to-steam engines that are on this list?

I have seen pictures of both 32640 and 32662 being transported to Butlins by rail but not as you might imagine. Both were conveyed on weltrol type well wagons and were clearly complete and still within the loading guage. I suspect that 32678 and 30102 were moved in a similar fashion.

Edit - I see that @Alan Kebby had already made the point

6203 Arrived at Pwlhelli by rail, dragged along the former LMS line to Afon Wen. It was delivered to the camp by slewing the main line and laying temporary track. Removed in the same way, except that the Bangor line had been closed and lifted for some years, so it was dragged along the Cambrian to Shrewsbury with special permission to traverse Barmouth bridge. I've a book on 6203 (by Brell Ewart?) giving all the details (including photos) but it's in the loft somewhere and it's too damn cold to fish it out!

I’m wondering about the journey from Derby to Butterley though… and possibly did it fail at Carlisle or Crewe back in 1996? How did it get back to Derbyshire from whichever location then? Tow by Res 47 or low loader?:confused:

The Rheidol tanks regularly travelled to/from Swindon for overhaul by 'low loader'. OK it was actually a machinery wagon on rails, but definitely not on their own wheels! How are we splitting hairs?

Has M7 245 ever been on a low loader? I know it was stored at Preston Park for a time, and a lot of it's moved in the 1980's were done by rail, but not sure of the gaps in between.

Here's your answer - waiting to be unloaded at York Carriage Works following its repaint by Derby apprentices in June '83.

Thanks Peter. I had a feeling that may have been the case, but was trying to work out when it may have been!

I must say I’ve gone through an old Platform 5 of mine and I could give examples of various diesels but steam locomotives are certainly testing the old grey matter!
I’ve found it’s been a case of up until 20xx loco xxxxx hasn’t moved by road, W24 and 43924 being the examples that spring to mind, it’s still an interesting subject though!

W24 was moved by road from Ryde StJohns to Newport when it first entered preservation.

And has also more recently visited the Bluebell!

I guess at various times it has travelled by lorry, ferry and floating crane

Something I didn’t know, I thought it ended up at Newport under its own power.

W24 has also been to Swanage, Mid Hants and Bodmin in fairly recent years.

Not sure a lorry was ever involved when originally transferred to the island in the 1920s though. I’ve seen photos of locos and coaches being craned directly from the rails onto boats at Southampton docks, bound for the IOW.
