It left in 1978, revisiting for the May 1990 diesel gala (I assume by rail on each occasion, although not documented in SVR News at the time). It was then requested for Railcar50 in 2004 and a quote was obtained for a rail move from Didcot, but the appearance was cancelled after it proved too expensive.

I also remember a GWR railcar passing Banbury station, but heading northbound and hauled by a Class 47. Looking at the "preserved railcars" web-site, I think it must have been W4W being transferred from Didcot to NRM York in 1979.

That one has most certainly been on a low loader I remember seeing it in the old GW museum in Swindon just before it closed in late 1998.

It also went to Bescot open day in 1990, not sure if that was before or after its SVR visit, but it looks like the whole movement from Didcot and back again was by rail.

Before – Bescot was 6 May 1990 and the SVR gala was 19-20 May, but it does look as though the whole thing was by rail as you say.

Wandering further off topic, but an interesting bit of trivia. It's not just Network Rail that create their own gauging issues. During the 1990 Gala, Railcar 22 only travelled as far north as Highley cattle dock because of tight clearances at the platform. It used to go quite happily between Bridgnorth and Bewdley in 1974!

It did indeed, one of the magazines had an article about the removal of the exhibits with a photo showing exactly that.

As you say was the Bescot open day before the gala and I seem to remember it went by rail from there to the SVR.

Given the title of this thread, I’m not sure why GWR 22 is on that list? If we are going to start including diesels then the list is going to get very long.

NER 1275 was ruled out by @torgormaig - it spent some time at the Darlington museum.

So how did Livingstone Thompson and VOR 9 get to NRM?
I know 9 was displayed on a wagon but not sure if that was its method of transport from /to Wales .

VoR No's 7 & 9 were displayed at Warley back in 2016, though only No 9 as a complete loco.

Why the question marks against Aerolite (NER No66)? I can think of no occasion when it has left York since the end of WWII.

At the moment, yes :) Though there is the small matter of how it gets turned through 90 degrees at some point before it turns a wheel in traffic ...

I think if this thread goes down the rabbit hole of “individual components on the back of a lorry” there won’t be much left!

LT has been on a lorry back and forth from the NRM several times now, as well as to Warley on at least 1 occasion, but I don't think Merddin Emrys, Earl of Merioneth, David Lloyd George or James Spooner (II) have left the Ffestiniog system as complete locos since they were constructed (boilers, bogies and bits have all moved by lorry at times, but not the complete loco).

Point of note - if we're discounting movements of parts of dismantled locomotives, or those under overhaul, do any of the WHR Garratts count as having "moved by road", as they need dismantling to get on a lorry? I'd argue that 138, 143 and K1 have all been moved by road as nominally operational locomotives, albeit dismantled a bit to do it, and so count. 140 was a largely complete locomotive when it was moved to the FR in 1997 as was reassembled on arrival, so that probably counts, but 87 and 130 were largely stripped to bits before shipping, and reassembled as part of their overhauls, so is that any different to components of other locos being moved from site to site as they are rebuilt? I suppose they count as having moved by road from South Africa to Exmoor back when they were reimported along the lines of 140. I suppose an equivalent would be if, say, Primrose at the Bluebell moved from Sheffield Park to perhaps the Flour Mill for overhaul / reassembly (Theoretically, I know it isn't doing that) over the course of 6 or 7 years, one component at a time, would that still count as never having moved by road?

VoR 7 and 9 have both been by lorry to Warley, as above, and 9 ran at Brecon briefly after an overhaul. 8 went to and from Swindon for overhaul on a rail wagon, but I don't think has been lorry bound yet.
