    Only just picked up (via a YouTube clip) that the train was not turned but both locos ran round, RTT shows the 5Z moves as cancelled For the loco and SC to turn all the infrastructure must have been working at the junctions so wonder why things changed.

    I came across the video from the "NON-trespasser" perched on the bridge across the track (hand held - as recommended by Nige). I'd need my hand held and a safety harness before venturing up that wall on an icy morning (or any morning come to that). [Seen leaving Blackburn from 55s]

    47802 just been attached in Carnforth loop at insistence of WCR. Rumoured to be because of poor rail conditions. Seriously? It's a big Royal Scot, a 4-6-0 with only 11 up and presumably full sand boxes. What a disappointment.

    Not a terribly nice day to take photos but there can't be many photographers out today that got out into the countryside 'under their own steam' - I did the car is in dock so I went out today on the push bike (south of Oxenholme).

    I think you can count the number of occasions on one hand when a London start CME has a steam loco put on the front at Carnforth and also a diesel on the back, even in the winter. So it's fair to assume that there is a good reason. I suggest that you all pick a reason to suit your view from the following list:
    - operational needs at Carlisle;
    - concern over keeping the train warm;
    - rail head and adhesion concerns;
    - possible locomotive worries;
    - spite.

    Have I missed anything?;)

    46115 failed its FTR a fortnight ago with a late substitution by 44932 - so perhaps there were a couple of concerns about it. Either way, appears to have put on a good display over Shap.

    I pick adhesion concerns, this afternoon the weather here (just a few miles from Wilpshire Bank) has fluctuated between mist and very light drizzle and the forecast is mist/fog.
