80150 on the Mid Hants. It ticks all the heritage boxes as it worked van trains of watercress out of Alresford back in the day and it ticks all the economy boxes for a heritage railway in the 21st century. Based on coal at £500 per ton, steaming fees and the current cost of other consumables (lubricants, water treatment, firebars, brake blocks etc.), this one in working order would save £1,100 per day in running costs compared with a Bulleid pacific. And yes, my data does come from a reliable source.

If we are looking at a small win I think I'd be putting some towards a couple of groups I support; class 15 group, the new build G5, class 58 group (don't judge...;p)

However, a big win is a different story! Think I'd like to do a bit of angel investing on some of the bigger long term projects.
'So, how much would you need to finish this particular project? Will you take a cheque?'

That and some serious cash at my local line. Cinderford in 4 years? *bankrolled*

    I can but dream...

The Great Western (SVR) Association's restorations of Collett bow-ended corridor Third 4786, Churchward Toplight Third 2426 and Hawksworth Brake Third 2242, and the LNER Carriage Fund's conversion of Bow Ended Third 5043 into a GW Buffet/Wheelchair saloon 9581.

Or a third (!) of the cost of overhauling D1013's bogies.

If you can do all that for £250K they must be nearly finished already!

I know which I would rather sit and listen to though. Much as I like the EE type 1 and 3 and a soft spot for one of the Hoovers, the 1000s sound nicer

Not as bad as it seems. 2242 is mostly complete with bogie/mechanical and some roof work remaining, I think it's mostly funded with a grant from the SVR Charitable Trust. 9581 is five years in, the volunteer gang is fitting it out and aims to complete as much as can be done at Bewdley by August 2023 before the staff and facilities at Kidderminster are needed to carry out a thorough mechanical overhaul of the running gear, suspension, brakes and pipework. 4786 is "progressing well" , 2426 is further back but in progress. So not nearly finished but on the way

Thanks for the info. The thing is, the big expenditure usually comes with finishing the interior.

Oh, it's about diesels. I know all about them. For example, there's a load of them known as Class 24252627, which had big quiffs and belonged to a Midlands fifties-throwback Rockabilly group called 'The Derby Sultrys". Later in life one of them revealed a rather non-binary approach to its identity and wished thereafter to be known as Ethel. That's it isn't it?

If you know your history young man then you’ll know that the second half of the group (2627’s) came from the West Midlands.
Smethwick also produced a rather useful piece of kit your railway has just acquired…

I’d buy myself a brake van as have always wanted one.
Then I’d set up the BBC – Brakevan Benevolent Charity - and invite applications from groups for grants to restore a brakevan. Would support any design of goods brake van.
Then when they’d all been restored run a brake van special somewhere.
