I suspect train crew route knowledge.
GN wouldn't sign beyond Ely and not diesel power.
GA Cambridge crews would probably sign all the route. Running anything would depend upon having enough bi mode units available and enough drivers who signed the whole route.
Also are the 755's route cleared beyond Stanstead North Jn to Liverpool St?

I presume WCRC went route learning in the spells with very few railtours.

    Cheers, Neil

The 745s work Liverpool St - Stansted so clearance shouldn't be an issue.

Don't forget that WCRC seem to sign for most routes.......

But WCRC are like any other operator and route knowledge for any individual expires after six months of working over or having a route refresher for a particular route. I'm not certain where the guidance is published but the RAIB came down heavily on one freight operator about 10 years ago for not keeping suitable (and realistic) records
The cost of route knowledge refreshers is why many TOC's have dropped keeping crews familiar with some diversionary routes.

Although from many on the wnxx thread it seems to be the DfT driving the reluctance to pay for the time and cost of diversionary route knowledge.

Well it's definitely the case that in my lifetime a WCR train has gone from Liverpool Street to Cambridge and Ely so the route has been traversed by them at some point. However I've no idea what 'signing' or 'refresher' means. Maybe they are hiring out motive power and rolling stock for drivers from another TOC to use.

That said, I recall that they didn't want DBC to drive Tangmere but maybe this is different.

It still seems odd that bimodes aren't being used. Within the overall costs of running a train from A to B, having one person who signs the route and one who signs the traction shouldn't add much to the cost.
On a different aspect; how does someone who wants to travel from London to Peterborough or places beyond find out that the WC trains are running and how to buy a ticket? The National Rail website offers either bus replacement or (depending on the destination) starting from St Pancras.

Edit: Correction: The National Rail website does offer at least the 15:22, with an anytime ticket from LNER.
