Yes, indeed i am agreeing with you, yes i know thats counter intuitive to Natpres, I come on here with a view to have my mind changed rather than to try and change the minds of others.

That RNAD brake seems a little spicy at 10K.

Is it the Brighton Belle car at, I think Rowden Mill? if so, on top of a hill in Derbyshire, exposed to the elements for a long time and possibly still full of heritage railkway insulation, and goodness knows how they got it there in the first place.

We don't have a Brighton Belle car at Rowden Mill.
    Our Saloon Coach is a 1962 Mk1 former Inspection Saloon/TIC DB999508.

Fortunately for us the insulation in this case turned out to be rockwool somewhat simplifying the conversion work.
During out conversion we have kept the inside structure largely intact - mostly retaining the original layout with nothing added that could not be undone.

Getting it to Rowden Mill was a bit of a challenge, Railway Support Services were exceptional in their navigating of the narrow local lanes, also aided by our very cooperative neighbours - 2 of whom cut down trees to allow the transporter to pass.

DB999508 now resides at out green platform next to the cattle dock.

The Little Mill Inn Facebook page reported on 6th Feb, that the sale of this had fallen through, and so Car 89 was back on the market again.
I have an unpleasant feeling that this will be the next BB vehicle to go for scrap.

This is the Little Inn at Rowarth - The Derbyshire Belle.

There is a wall that has been built behind Car 89 after its arrival, that now prevents loading via ramp so a lift is the only way to collect. It'll probably require the body lifting separately to the bogies, which means three lifts. Add to that the narrow lanes, I'm not totally sure just how a lowloader will get down there.

The latest owners sadly chucked all the original seating in the skip just over 2 years ago, so what remains is a basic shell. We thought about it, but the recovery costs far outweigh what you're getting especially with the lack of an authentic interior.

There is an LMS Period 2 coach for sale on ebay , with a close date tomorrow. It's currently on £50 (it's not a model - it's a real full size one).
The coach has significant rot in the cantrails and would need the body to be dismantled before being removed from Carrog to the loading point at Llangollen.
It's a good buy for anybody needing LMS bogies and gangway connectors, so get those bids in !

    Bob.

Surely this is a terrible idea, how do you know the person who buys isn't just a scrap dealer and that you have effectively just given it away.

I understand the Bluebell recently sold 2 Maunsell coaches to someone who had no intentions for them other than as scrap, but the railway only found out after the sale so hadn't removed any spares or anything.

Railways seem to be in far too much of a hurry to destroy what they have.

The cost of removing and transporting said coach is likely to run into many thousands of pounds, suspect that is more than the scrap value despite the nominal £ 50 sale price.

Don't shoot the messenger - I was only passing on the sale price for info! I have nothing to do with the coach.

Also don’t blame the railway; this was privately owned.

How long before someone mentions "Stuart" and "Reeder" in the same sentence? :)

As a restorer of wooden-bodied carriages & rolling stock, it does grieve me when things that could be rescued end up with the scappies.

Look at what happened - ie the state it was in - to the brake now running as NSR23 to see what can be achieved ...

    yeah, I know, needs ££££££ !

I don't think it could be put any better

we seem to be developing an attitude in preservation that things are now past rescue and it is time to scrap. I have a long running disagreement with proponents of cannibal engines on this score and yet the donor boilers are eminently restorable . We've seem some of the fabulous work that can be done with money and manpower whether it be engines or rolling stock

I've seen a note from one line challenged financially where they are looking to weigh in as much scrap as possible which fills me with dread . once these things are gone they are gone

Exactly ! Once gone, it's gone - although if fully recorded you *can* build a replica.
The fewtincog had this attitude, in spades, scrapping a lot of stuff that really should have been preserved in an attempt to raise funds.

I hear what you are saying!!! What makes it worse is all the “project impossible” restorations that have been achieved over the years which shows it can indeed be possible. Also it’s railway preservation that’s our interest, including it challenges.

You mention the new builds. I’d argue something like Tornado or Lyn was worth doing and a fantastic achievement but am not as comfortable with the Canibalisim that some of those types of projects seem to involve, to me that is not preservation in any sense.

I don’t necessarily mind adaptions to suit modern life such as conversions of carriages to provide wheelchair provision as an example, that is important for a heritage railway in the 21st century, but as with you the vanity projects sit less comfortably.
