If you need a wheel drop it’s a bit more than an audit.

Not necessarily. If you have a wheeldrop you can audit the state of axleboxes very quickly indeed. Without one you probably have to assume that they are ok unless you have reason to believe otherwise. A wheeldrop may not be essential but it is a very handy piece of kit if you have one.

audit though may entail some dismantling , pits, wheel drops, cranes etc that are best done at crewe potentially

It does make you wonder, was the move to Crewe brought on by concerns over the restoration? or is it as a result of 6024 being to heavy for the WSR so it would have had to have moved by road anyway, at least as others have already said, Crewe has at its disposal everything they would need, plus a mainline testing route, if after running in and trials at SVR, It's deemed ready to be tested on the main line, might the new cylinders be an concern if they are narrower, so the inspectors might want to be reassured of their soundness, before signing the engine off, plus if needed to assess axle boxes, its far easier to check them with the wheel set dropped out, on the wheel drop than to have to hire a crane and lift the engine, It sounds like Crewe are just wanting to be careful, it's their own engine after all, Ok, if we hear of a list of defects found, then clearly we will know its because the engineers at Crewe had concerns, about work done under contract.

Word on the grapevine suggests that 6024 won't be returning to Minehead, or indeed the 6024 group, and will remain at Crewe. Whether that is a result of the, ahem "Engineering Audit" (red herring IMO) is up for debate.

I'm of the opinion that it was more about getting the loco to Crewe/out of the (capable) hands of those that overhauled it than an engineering audit. Pure speculation, of course.

Or perhaps LSL would prefer to play down any connection with Minehead?
Not the engineering capability, but the wider governance issues as outlined in other threads.

    Cheers, Neil

It's probably those governance issues that have prompted LSL to carry out a full and extensive inspection of the engine, and the decision to sever the connection fully, is most likely as a result of those inspections, nothing has been announce yet, but i suppose in time we will know,
if 6024 is moved to the SVR soon, then everythings good, and the overhaul was to LSL's standards, if shots appear of it in Crewe undergoing rectification work, we will know theres problems.

I just hope those words don't come back to haunt you, there is already speculation that some remedial work is needed,

It's unlikely to haunt me, as I admitted that I was purely speculating with my opinion. It'll all come out in the wash, I'm sure.

Looking back on this thread the steam tests etc were circa a year ago and things seem little further forward?

Mission accomplished? Their website is off. The loco is tucked into Crewe with LSL as operators and any remaining queries about ownership removed.
Well done, 6024 Preservation Society, for all your achievements.
But clearly there are major uncertainties and cost issues to be resolved.

The society went pear shaped when the got sued, they also therefore lost the Engineer that kept the loco in tip top condition as a result of that

Let’s hope LSL complete all the remaining tasks and get it back up and running soon. Although I would imagine 60532 is the priority at the moment.

It depends on how the assessment of the work done previously has gone on 6024, but 60532 will be the priority, if only because LSL know there shouldn't be any surprises, with it, and it would make sense to shop the A2, get it over to the SVR, And any snagging done, before turning to 6024,
