I was reading on wikipedia that LMS 'Hughes Crab 42859 is preserved but in scrap yard condition at RAF Binbrook! Why is it at Binbrook? Any ideas? Just curious thats all, thought it was abit out of the ordinary!

I think it's just a safe place to store it.

Apparently it's in very poor condition and dismantled without much work having happened.
It appears to be one of preservations lost locomotives.

Yes, I remember speaking to someone about this locomotive once, I think the owners bought it with a long term aim of restoration but apparently they discovered either the boiler (or the firebox ?) was in very poor condition, if not scrap, hence all ground to a halt.

This may be one of the £1m+ restoration projects hence needs a very good sponsor to make headway but considering how many Bulleids get the £1m treatment it'd be nice if someone would take on the only other crab likely to steam... it's just not as glamourous as a bullied.

Ive seen this site on google (for some time)..

The old Barry List noted that 42859 had a very bad firebox and seemed to be considered irrepairable

Given what has happened in preservation since it probably is albeit with some large ££££

one can only hope for a positive fiture for this engine

Would have thought that Bongo would have offered some info on this loco by now with his knowledge of LMS loco matters and detailed records. Perhaps he's on holiday

Until a few months ago there WAS a Bulleid at Binbrook as well, but that has now been moved.

The adventures of 35011 have been mentioned elsewhere, but here's a recap. Went to to the WSR early 2008 to donate a driving wheel set to replace the set with a cracked axle on 34046. Late 2008, 35011 moved from the WSR to Southern Locomotive Ltd.'s Kentish base at Sellindge, where long-term overhaul is on the cards.

I agree it would be nice to see 42859 overhauled, as a member of a a class of which only one other has, or is likely to steam in preservation surely it would be better than yet another Bulleid and far more suited to operation on most preserved lines.

On a similar note regarding preservations lost locos does anyone have an update on progress on 76084?
I found this picture on the internet but it is a couple of years old now.

Actually, 2700 steamed in preservation, on Santa Specials in 1970 on the KWVR. It's the only time it has run since BR withdrawal though...

Does anyone know who currently owns no. 42859? I know it was part of a preservation group which were based in a roundhouse or old railway yard of some description at dairy coats, somewhere in hull I believe, until it was disbanded. I also know that the 45305 Locomotive association was also part of it. But who owns her?

This has always been a sad story to me. The perfect loco for a larger preserved line - WSR, MHR, SVR, NYMR etc., and still sitting rusting away. Definitely on my euromillions list!

I'd love to acquire it for CVR, along with a set of LMS coaches lol

AS you say, have to wait for my time on the EUro Millions.
