Porthcawl Miniature Railway Appeal

Hi Folks,

I was somewhat hesitant to post this up on here as it's very much a "local" thing, but a few of us in South Wales have got together to try and acquire and restore the last surviving Porthcawl Miniature Railway locomotive, Silver Jubilee, with a long-term view of rebuilding a miniature railway in Porthcawl (or nearby - Councils huh). We are also slowly in the process of legally registering as a charity, but that's a long slog!

 

Shouldn't this be in the Miniature Railways section?

That's the trouble of classifications! - the definition used by this forum differs from that used by the railway!

 

I would say that the name is a legacy from the 1930s when most 15" lines were referred to as miniature. I'm indifferent about whether it's classified as narrow gauge or miniature by NatPres!

 

Same argument re: the Groudle Glen .... except there it's t'other way around. A miniature line on 2ft gauge. Given a Quarry Hunslet is too big for the GGR, they have a case!

 

Ok, how does this fund me thing work? Is it the one where we all pledge to give £x if and only if the target is reached? Or is this just a tin rattling?
I did look at the how it works page on the fundme website, but I'm no wiser.

 

I presume its a diesel?

 

Petrol-electric steam outline I think.

 

We get everything pledged regardless of whether we hit the target. Best we could do in the time available - we hadn't expected the loco to become available so soon

Yes, petrol with hydrostatic transmission originally, upgraded to electric transmission shortly after WW2

 

Just to update this - charity registration was successful and a new appeal has been set-up that accepts gift aid - https://localgiving.org/appeal/Silver-Jubilee-Appeal. Between the appeal, and a little local grant funding, we're about half way there. The Association has also been offered the last surviving coach from the original line but that will require further fundraising

 

If anyone has visited the page and was wondering why the loco initially moved to the Severn Valley Railway, the plan was to use it on a short demonstration line at Hampton Loade which was built but never carried passengers. There is some history of the project on the SVR Wiki Hampton Loade page.

Fundraising has gone really well, close to 3/4 of the way there with local grant funding on top. Have been bowled over by the level of local support and have even been offered another exiting project connected to the original line

 

Again, can this be moved to the minature section?

 

You need to report this to the mods - they don't actively monitor every thread

 

Again, forum rules are 15" and up is narrow gauge...
