I very nearly didn't bother this morning, but after two sunny spring days partly spent tidying up the neighbourhood cat's toilet - ok - the garden, I needed a break from the house.
60007 on the Up fast at Madeley, so used to the loco moves being on the slow :Arghh: ( and curiously the last time I saw an A4 on the WCML fast lines it was raining too ).
Usually I'd have this location to myself but the new paint job, I guess, brought out quite a crowd, though some thought it was Flying Scotsman that was coming.

compared to my photos just above yours you might think we were in different places (OK 200 metres apart) Do I guess that your shot has been enhanced at all - or do I need a new camera

From personal observation, any significant lineside gathering that includes non-enthusiasts will include at least one person who thinks that it is Flying Scotsman that is coming. I even encountered one lady who was under that impression while waiting for 31806 on a Brockenhurst to Portsmouth & Southsea 'shuttle' in 2021.

All my photos are shot in RAW and processed (rather than enhanced) in Adobe Photoshop to get what I think best out of the image (just as I would have done in a darkroom from a negative).

The exposure was 1/800 @ f4.5 at 1000 iso - taken on a 9 yr old Nikon D800. The detail is all in there in a RAW image and the sensor in the D800 does perform well even in dull conditions.

All I've done to this is adjust shadows (lighten) and highlights (darken) with a slight extra brushing over the exhaust in Photoshop Camera Raw Filter to bring out some detail and similarly to lighten the motion - then reduce the overall noise level - not too noticeable at 1000 iso but it is there.
Overall the saved .tif is very little different in look to the RAW file.
I did remove a few intruding twigs - and the two NR orange clad gents, but that's a real advantage over using film !

for comparison - the unprocessed version.

The processing would doubtless have increased the contrast and colour, but I'd suggest part of the reason might be that you zoomed into the loco thereby going through more of the rain, whereas jsm8b took a more wide angle view so everything was nearer and less affected by the conditions.

Could be that. What I really need is a tutorial on working with raw files. I don't have Photoshop but have looked at a couple of the free alternatives but don't manage to improve things much.

Surely your camera was supplied with the software to process the images you take - noting that each camera manufacturer has their own RAW coding hence the need for the manufacturer-specific software to process it. Once you adopt the RAW software you need to use trial and error or buy a suitable book to learn more. I do not know if the following books are out of print but I would recommend either A Guide to Digital Railway Photography by Kim Fullbrook (pub. Ian Allan 2008 ISBN 978-0-7110-3341-2) or The Complete Digital Photo Manual in association with Digital Photo Magazine (pub Sevenoaks 2011 ISBN 978-1-86200-912-7) as a start point for further information.
An important point to note - as noted by jsm8b - is once you have a specific way of processing images the constancy helps cope with different circumstances as noted by his crop of the original image to concentrate on the locomotive.

A bit out of date but footage of 45596, 45690 and 45407 on light engine moves to the KWVR:

That is superb. The soundtrack reminds me of the brilliant Peter Handford S & C recordings.

Many thanks gents, much appreciated. The weather was perfect for filming, and remarkably similar (cold and still) on each occasion; it was quite special to hear each loco approaching and then work away into the night, even with just one carriage each.

Do we know why those were three separate moves rather than all coupled together?
Edit: With all three videos showing a very similar scene I just assumed it was the same night. Re-boot brain!

Is it not because they were across three different months, Nov 22, Feb 23, March 23?
