I have posted a few updates from the Holden F5 Trust in the new build thread previously, but thought I would start a dedicated thread for the project. It goes a little under the radar in comparison to other new builds, however some major progress has been made in the last few years. The trust recently posted a lengthy engineering update which may be of interest: https://www.holdenf5.co.uk/news/

The frames are coming along at Tyseley, while the wheel sets are being assembled at Riley's.
I should say that while I'm a member of trust I'm not closely involved with the project, but I can forward any questions to those who are. I did have a good chat with the chairman at the East Anglian Railway Museum last year, he was very enthusiastic and excited about the recent developments.

I have to agree with the EARM chairman, this looks a great little engine.
Be nice to see it on some authentic LNER stock.

Just to clarify I was speaking to the chairman of the F5 Trust, it was at the EARM during their steam gala last October.

No problem, I can see how my sentence could cause confusion!
I agree, we're fortunate there is some wonderfully restored GER and LNER stock that 789 could potentially run with in future. Dare I start mentioning liveries for a loco still under construction...well this is nat pres after all!

Post number 5 and the livery debate started! Is this some sort of record? ;):)

GER blue initially, first overhaul LNER assume black? Finally BR black. There, everyone's happy!

Given there are so many grounded GER coach bodies in East Anglia, in my dreams they'd be restored and united with new running gear...

My vote would be black first then blue, a bit like 60007 recently. Specifically BR black, in case (or hopefully) there are people still with us by then who remember these locos in BR days. Could be for potential for photo charters depending on where it goes to...ok now I am getting ahead of things!

I believe the plan, as I last understood it, was to go into GER livery to begin with as that is how it is being 'marketed' in publicity materials. After that is yet to be decided but will probably be put to members to vote on.

It's one I'm very excited to see running and will be interesting to compare. The recorded 17,571lbf tractive effort, if I've read it right, was more that of a Y14 (16,940lbf) and LMS Ivatt tank (17,400lbf), but only being four coupled is likely to be what restricts it. That said it will no doubt fill a middle-power loco need for many heritage lines?

Nothing wrong with 17,500lbf tractive effort four-coupled passenger tanks for heritage line use ;)

Says the man who puts drive-by class 37 pics into random threads ;)

Anyway - looking forward to this loco in due course.

Hope we can bring it to Bluebell for a gala / extended visit at some point; not prototypical but it would look quite nice with the Cheshams I think.

I think you are right. The J69s had a TE of 19,090lbf while the N7s were of course higher at 20,512lbf. Though this will be a brand new locomotive, which cannot be said of the N7 currently under overhaul. Not to say that loco won't still be very capable when it returns to steam, but the EARM might not want to push it too hard. In any case a working standard gauge 2-4-2 will be something unique, and could be compared to the 0-4-4s of similar power classification.

I can remember someone fundraising for this at an NVR gala once and I gave them a few quid. Big main line engines do draw the crowds but as of yet, I've only watched SNG on Railcam - I've not gone and had a ride as I think I'd prefer a run out behind the Coal Tank instead when it arrives?

Didn't 37s have a kind of valance at each corner behind the buffers when first built?

Possibly one for another thread, but yes they did have a skirting around the buffers, this was removed after the first overhauls in the 1970’s
